Episode 3: A Duel in Love

At Duel Academy, Alexis says that Monsters are split into Normal Monsters, Effect Monsters, Fusion Monsters and Ritual Monsters. After successfully splitting each type of card into the correct category, Crowler congratulates her, saying that he wouldn't expect anything less from his Blue Obelisks. He then ponders who to ask the next question and chooses Syrus. Syrus tries to answer and one of the Obelisks tells him that even pre-duelers know this one. Jaden tells Syrus to relax, saying that Syrus totally has this one but Crowler disagrees and orders Syrus to sit back down. He then asks the class for someone to give him the answer, provided it's not a Slifer Red student. Jaden objects that Crowler shouldn't make fun of Slifer Reds. After all, Jaden's a Slifer and he beat him so Crowler's really making fun of himself. That's it! I cannot tolerate this Slifer at his school for another second! Crowler thinks. He'll see to it that Jaden is taken down! Professor Banner then chimes in telling the class that he specializes in the strategies in the world of Duel Monsters. Syrus thanks Jaden. For what? Jaden asks. Syrus then says for bailing him out back there. Banner notices this and frowns. Jaden sees this and tells Syrus he may have to do it again soon. Banner asks Syrus to bring him Pharaoh, his cat, that is unless he's minoring as a scratch post.

In his office, Crowler is writing a letter. How dare that little ingrate make a mockery of him like that! He puts on lipstick and kisses an envelope. In what looks like a gymnasium, Jaden wonders where Syrus is. Crowler, meanwhile, finds Jaden's shoes and "plants the bait". Back at the gym, the gym instructor introduces herself as Fonda Fontane, telling them she'll be their gym instructor for the semester. Syrus races out, saying that the girl's locker room sign should be made bigger. He reaches his locker and finds Jaden's sneakers. Guess Jaden must still be using his locker. He sees the letter. This isn't Jaden's! He looks around cautiously. He opens the letter and is shocked to find out it's from Alexis Rhodes. He stumbles to the floor saying the letter's a lot better than what his mom used to write and then imagines Alexis and himself as "lovers". Back at their dorm, Jaden enters, telling Syrus the shower's all his but Chumley tells him that Syrus left. "That sure doesn't sound like Syrus" Jaden says.

Meanwhile, Syrus rows his boat to the Obelisk Blue dorm, where Crowler has just arrived, saying that he'll snap a photo of Jaden at the Obelisk Blue dorm and Jaden'll be expelled! Inside the pool, Alexis and her friends are discussing what Jaden had said in class earlier that day. Crowler, urges who he thinks is Jaden to fall into his trap like the sap he is....except to his shock it's not Jaden, it's that stammering Field Spell nitwit! One of the Obelisk students questions who's there and thinking he's been caught, Crowler runs and falls into the water. The other Obelisk girls crowd around Syrus, demanding him to tell them why he's here and he'd better provide a good one. Syrus explains that Alexis wrote him a love letter but the others aren't buying it. Poor Syrus can't even get a fake love letter. Just then, Fonda walks out wondering what all the racket is. Alexis tells her friends to hide Syrus. She tells Fonda that they'll try to be more quiet. Fonda hopes so, it's nearly midnight! She walks off. Alexis decides to use Syrus as bait so they can learn what they wanted to know about Jaden before. She knows how to get him to their dorm.

At Jaden's dorm, Jaden is playing a video game when he gets a message on his "receiver". It's an Obelisk Blue student, telling Jaden that they have Syrus and orders Jaden to come right away. Crowler is annoyed that he tries to expel one student and everyone turns against him! He sees someone in the distance, it's Jaden. "You're a little late," he says. Jaden arrives at the Obelisk Blue dorm and demands to know what's going on. One of Alexis' friends tells him that Syrus was trespassing. Alexis adds that Jaden's trespassing too and orders Jaden to duel her if he doesn't want to get turned in. Jaden accepts. Alexis inspects her hand. Etoile Cyber's been edited for US as shown at 11:36 into the episode, although it's hard to see. It would also appear she's a Normal Monster in the Japanese version.

She plays Etoile Cyber (1200) in Attack Mode. Oops! It's hard to see but when she plays the card on her Duel Disk from 11:43-11:44 into the episode, she puts in one slot then slides to another!

She sets 1 card face down and ends her turn. Jaden draws Sparkman. Oops! At 12:00 into the episode, Sparkman's shown as an Effect Monster! Also notice the difference in the card's art at this point for the Japanese version. He summons Elemental Hero Sparkman (1600) in Attack Mode and attacks Etoile Cyber. However, Alexis counters with Doble Passé, making Sparkman attack Alexis directly but her Etoile Cyber can do the same thing to Jaden and does so. Her LPs drop to 2400. Alexis explains that her Etoile Cyber gains 600 ATK when attacking directly so her ATK rises to 1800. (The real card only gains 500 ATK when attacking directly). Jaden's down to 2200. Jaden says that Alexis is something else for sacrificing her own LPs to get to his. Alexis asks if Jaden's impressed but Jaden thinks he's in love. Alexis says he's sweet but she has to crush him and draws Blade Skater, shown at 13:07 into the episode with altered art for US.

She summons Blade Skater (1400) in Attack Mode. Then she uses Polymerization to fuse her Monsters for Cyber Blader (2100) in Attack Mode. She attacks Sparkman with Cyber Blader, destroying him and reducing Jaden's LPs to 1700. Alexis' friends congratulate her. That'll show that Jaden's beating Crowler was just a fluke!

It'll be Jaden's pleasure to prove them wrong and he draws. He activates Fusion Gate, allowing him to summon Fusion Monsters without Polymerization. He summons Elemental Hero Flame Wingman (2100) in Attack Mode. Alexis tells him that since their Monsters have the same ATK, they'll destroy each other. "Not after this they won't," Jaden says and activates Kishido Spirit, which prevents his Wingman from being destroyed in battle by a Monster with the same ATK as his. He attacks and Alexis tells him that he hasn't done his homework. Neither Monster is destroyed. How did Cyber Blader survive his Wingman's attack? Alexis explains that Cyber Blader can't be destroyed in battle if the opponent only has one Monster out.

I guess Alexis has Jaden but Alexis tells him that when she gets him he'll know it ant equips Cyber Blader with Fusion Weapon. (The real Cyber Blader is Level 7 so Fusion Weapon wouldn't work there.) Cyber Blader's ATK rises to 3600. Alexis attacks Flame Wingman, destroying it and putting Jaden's LPs to 200. She then tells him that his LPs are looking pretty low. Her friends add that if he loses he and Syrus get expelled. Jaden says it won't happen. "You shouldn't make promises you can't deliver," Alexis thinks to herself. "I hope I'm not making a promise I can't deliver," Jaden says to himself. The only card Jaden has out is Fusion Gate but he still has a way to win!

He draws and smiles. It's Monster Reborn. He summons Elemental Hero Clayman (0800) in Attack Mode. Then he uses Monster Reborn to bring back Sparkman in Attack Mode. Alexis objects, telling Jaden that Sparkman doesn't stand a chance. Jaden agrees. Maybe he won't but with Fusion Gate, he's going to summon someone who will! He summons Elemental Hero Thunder Giant (2400) in Attack Mode. Alexis tells him that Thunder Giant's weaker than her Cyber Blader. Jaden knows but one of Thunder Giant's abilities is that he can destroy any Monster whose original ATK is less than his own. (The real card requires the owner to discard a card to use Thunder Giant's effect) Cyber Blader is destroyed. He attacks directly with Thunder Giant and wins the duel.

Shortly after, Alexis agrees not to tell anyone about what happened. Her friends tell her that Jaden and Syrus should get turned in now but Alexis isn't listening. Besides, even if she did win the duel, she couldn't have turned them in. This school is a lot more exciting with them than without.  Meanwhile, Crowler says he was lucky and will find a way to expel him...once he finds a way home!
