Episode 125: The Darkness Returns (1)

Inside Kaiba's Duel Tower, the finalists make their way to the top, knowing what's at stake. The rest are about to make their way up as well but someone must tell Serenity and before Tristan can make his way to her, Mokuba makes a call to her. Serenity declines the request to come watch and begs Joey to win his duel, which takes place shortly. At the top, Joey wonders where his friends are but Dark Marik doesn't see why he'd want them once engulfed by the shadows. The other finalists arrive too and Yami warns Joey of his most dangerous duel ahead but Joey maintains high confidence.

Kaiba protests that Joey is no match for DM's God Card but Joey says he did just fine yet Kaiba recalls the God Card knocking Joey out cold (though it wasn't the real Ra, his statement is closer to being true than Joey's for Joey never actually suffered Ra's wrath since Yami stepped in and took the blow). Yami tells Kaiba that no one understands Ra's secrets but Kaiba uncovered those secrets while the others were asleep. Yami feels that Kaiba's connection to his ancient past also contributed. Kaiba will be watching Joey's duel closely to perfect his strategy once he takes Slifer but he has to get past Yami first.

At last, the rest of the gang come up from below but are greeted to Joey's grumpier side. The platform is raised and Dark Marik is given the first turn by playing Gil Garth (1800) in Attack Mode, then setting 1 card to end his turn. Joey's hand doesn't contain any strong-enough monsters so he sets 1 card and plays Alligator's Sword (1200) in Defense Mode. Dark Mark decides to bring his Shadow Game up a notch and shows Joey Mai's progress in the Shadow Realm. Yugi wants to save Joey but is reminded of the promise they made to Joey to stop protecting him. Joey is ready for Dark Marik's shadow game but isn't curious about what makes it differ from when Mai lost and is shown an energy stream that connects him to his monster and will drain its owner of energy when the connected monster is attacked.

He summons Drillago (which is an Effect Monster in the CG) (1600) in Attack Mode and attacks with it, destroying Joey's monster and causing Joey to yell loud enough that Serenity hears it. DM's direct attack with GG forces Joey to activate his hidden Scapegoat card and GG only takes out a token and Joey doesn't lose energy since it's not a Monster Card (they are treated as such in the CG). DM admits that he might've underestimated Joey and ends his turn. Joey draws and summons Panther Warrior (2000) in Attack Mode and tributes a Goat Token to let PW attack and destroy DM's GG, leaving DM down to 3800 LPs. DM draws and uses Tribute Burial to take 1 monster out of his and Joeys' Graveyards and summon Helpoemer (2000) in Attack Mode. Next, he sets 1 card to end his turn, causing confusion in Yami and Joeys' minds.

Joey draws Jinzo but isn't willing to risk it yet and instead plays Rocket Warrior (1500) in Attack Mode, letting DM activate his face down Hidden Soldiers card, allowing him to bring out any Level 4 or less monster from his hand and chooses Plasma Eel (500) in Attack Mode, then uses PE's effect to equip itself to Joey's PW, which will lose ATK and Joey will lose energy. (The real HS activates whenever your opponent Summons a monster and only lets you bring out a Level 4 or less DARK monster from your hand.) However, to DM's surprise, Joey stands and uses his RW's effect to lower Helpoemer's ATK by 500 to 1500. His next attack with PW destroys Helpoemer and leaves DM down to 3300 LPs. However, this has triggered Helpoemer's effect to put itself in Joey's Grave and not only takes his Jinzo but will take one card from Joey's hand each turn. (The real card stays in your own Graveyard and cannot be Special Summoned from there.) DM finds this duel about as exciting as his duel with Mai and Joey's fate will be the same as her's, an eternity in the Shadow Realm!
