Episode 58: Espa Roba, the ESP Duelist (1)

Inside Battle City, Joey spots a duel and sneaks to the front to find out that the duel is in its final seconds that ends in Rex's defeat. The duelist, whom we learn is Espa Roba from Rex, asks Joey if he wants to duel when the others around him conjure up excuses. Despite Rex's advice to stay away, Joey takes up the challenge. Meanwhile, Tristan enters Serenity's hospital room, bringing her a laptop to view Joey's next duel, or rather him give the play-by plays. Only problem is, the laptop is off and he's clueless on turning it on. (So did you just buy it or did you borrow it from someone without looking how it works?)

Two days into the tournament and Tea` hasn't found Yugi, whom is considering his next opponent when a few duelists rush by, wanting to see the ESP duelist. At the duel, the stakes are set and the duel begins (and Flame Swordsman at far right in Joey's hand at 5:17 into the US episode is STILL a Fusion Monster). Back at the hospital, the nurse shows Tristan the ropes of his laptop and they manage to find a duel Joey is partaking in. Joey begins his turn but is interrupted by ER's psychic nonsense but resumes by trying to play Giltia the Dark Knight but is told of Battle City's rule about tributing monsters (which you had mastered in your last duel, Joey) and of his "illegal card" (which is really an illegal move). Joey explains that his error was due to giving ER a head start so his defeat isn't too much.

ER takes his turn with more psychic nonsense that Joey protests is a scam before playing Cyber Raider (1400) in Attack Mode (whose artwork is totally different in the Japanese as shown at 8:01 into the episode). (The real card is an Effect Monster that can either destroy an Equip Spell or give it an Equip Spell from another monster.) Oops! CR's DEF is shown at 2100 at 8:08 into the US episode! His direct attack leaves Joey down to 2600 and Tristan puzzled as to what's going on. (So much for streaming live because that's pretty sad if you can't actually see the duel.) He conjures up a lie that Joey is doing well and hopes that he doesn't actually become a liar. Meanwhile on the roof, Yami is suspicious about the ESP duelist and discovers his brothers are spying on Joey's hand.

Joey picks up on an error ER made from his claim that Joey had two Graceful Dice cards when only one is present (though the Japanese does make it harder to distinguish the two, given that they're both Quick-Play Spells).

He begins his turn by playing Swordsman of Landstar (500) in Attack Mode and sets 2 cards to end his turn, which ER thinks are both GD cards, only one of which can be activated at a time. Next he tributes CR for The Fiend Megacyber (2200) in Attack Mode and Joey activates Graceful Dice but its die result yields only a three, putting SoL's ATK at 1500 (the real card gives any monster additional ATK equal 100 x the die result until the End Phase). Since it's not enough, ER attacks but Joey activates his 2nd card, a Skull Dice card, dividing a monster's ATK by the die result (the designated monster only loses ATK equal to 100 x the die result until the End Phase in the CG). The die lands on a 5, leaving TFM at 440 ATK and is destroyed, leaving ER down to 2940 LPs. Joey has figured out ER's scam and Mokuba busts his brothers for it but lets them go provided they duel honorably from then on.

Tea` has found a bench and once again recalls Ishizu's words and ER questions Joey's accusation of having fake psychic abilities (then makes it more obvious by speaking into his earpiece). ER sets 1 card to end his turn. Joey plays Alligator's Sword (1500) in Attack Mode and attacks with it, leaving ER's score down to 1440. His second direct attack is stopped by ER's face down Mind Control card, giving him control of Joey's SoL. (The real card is a Spell Card that prevents you really from doing anything with the monster you take except use it for a Synchro Summon or Xyz Summon). Joey sets 1 card to end his turn and ER tributes his newly acquired SoL for Jinzo (2400) in Attack Mode. Its effect destroys Joey's hidden Chasm of Spikes card. (The real card prevents activating Trap Cards or their effects.) With no defenses, Joey will be destroyed in no time and he'll be out of the tournament so Joey can't let ER win!
