Episode 56: Yugi vs. Rare Hunter (1)

Finally, they're using the Season 2 intro, which is my favorite intro (though strangely they still have him summoning Exodia like in Season 1). We find Solomon sweeping streets outside his game shop ranting about having to do his son's chores, then remembering that the tournament is starting today and closes up early (yeah, like we're going to know what the sign says, even if it does feature a "do not" symbol. We'd better understand "closed" like what is usually put on doors). Upstairs, Yami remarks on how powerful Yugi's deck is and repeats much of the same that they've said before but it's enough to give Yugi confidence. Meanwhile, Joey is frustrated about losing his Red-Eyes card before the tournament even started but remembers to check up on his sister Serenity.

On the other end of the line is Tristan, whom explains about keeping Serenity company. He hands the phone to Serenity, whom asks about all that Tristan had told her but once Tristan hangs up, Joey is determined to go after him. Up above Domino City, fireworks fill the air and two clueless businessmen learn about the Battle City tournament and its Duel Disks. Elsewhere, Yugi arrives in Domino City's center pondering about the clear object in his hand that was packaged with his Duel Disk, figuring it's another one of Kaiba's twists. Seconds later, Mai arrives, excited about the tournament and whom to defeat first. Not everyone is so happy as Rex and Weevil arrive, demanding payback. However, Mako Tsunami is also in this tournament and briefly chokes Weevil. While they argue about their deck's best cards, Seeker is busy having a drink and looking through his duelist database on his laptop. Weevil, Rex and Mako split up, agreeing to settle their feud in the tournament. Yugi's hopes of Joey arriving before Kaiba's announcement of the tournament's beginnings are in vain as Kaiba makes the announcement via a blimp.

From above, Yugi spots Joey angrily marching along, determined to find Seeker for his REBD card. However, Seeker has already taken Joey's rarest card and no longer desires to duel him but when Yugi arrives,  he requests a duel from him instead. Naturally, Yugi accepts and becomes Yami, setting the stakes for the duel. Seeker warns that he'll tear up Joey's REBD if Joey exposes his strategy (clearly bluffing because there'd be no point in keeping the card anymore). While an overslept Tea` scours the city to find Yami and Joey, Yami gets the duel set up and Kaiba Corp's database makes note of this duel and several others taking place at that time. Yami begins the duel by setting 2 cards face down and summoning Beta the Magnet Warrior (1700) in Attack Mode. The clueless businessmen get their 2nd lesson about the tournament by learning about the holographic monster images.

Seeker draws and activates Graceful Charity to draw 3 cards, then discard 2, getting an additional Exodia piece to his two in hand. He gloats about Yami forfeiting if he knew what his strategy was but Yami activates Light of Intervention, preventing monsters from being Set.

Nevertheless, Seeker summons Stone Statue of the Aztecs (2000) in Defense Mode. (The real card is an Effect Monster.) Yami tributes his BtMW for (the not-so-almighty) Berformet (1400) in Attack Mode, triggering its effect to bring out Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts. (The real card's effect only adds Gazelle from the Deck to the hand.) Then he uses Polymerization to send both monsters to the Grave for Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast (2100) in Attack Mode, remembering other Battle City rules before setting 1 card to end his turn. Once again, Seeker correctly predicts a Graceful Charity card which he activates, now holding 4 Exodia pieces. Back at Kaiba Corp, Kaiba asks for info on Seeker but little is known since he wasn't in their database until about a week ago, possibly by hacking in and adding himself.

Mokuba goes to disqualify him but Kaiba stops him, saying that the Rare Hunters took his bait. With the duel still in progress, Seeker mentally says he'll see what's coming next thanks to invisible ink and his x-ray contact lens, the final piece of Exodia (which isn't actually true, given what we saw at 15:20 into the episode, which is that same card so one of these two has the wrong artwork here). He decides to strengthen his defenses by playing Gear Golem the Moving Fortress (2200) in Defense Mode (which is also an Effect Monster in the CG). Joey can't stand watching another minute and goes to tell Yami but Yami stops him with a flashback to when Weevil tossed his Exodia cards into the ocean and that allows Yami to realize that Seeker is waiting for Exodia. How will Yami stop Exodia? Seeker's hunt is over!
