Episode 33: Best of Friends, Best of Duelists (1)

Croquet announces that the match Yugi and Joey are about to play determines the winner of the tournament and the one with the right to duel Pegasus. Both players have something they must win the tournament for. No one could've guessed that best friends would end up facing each other. Tea` wants it to be just a simple coin toss to determine the winner, given both players are best friends. Yugi is having doubts about this duel but Joey reminds him of the very thing he said about the match earlier. Before they begin, after Yugi becomes Yu-Gi-Oh, Pegasus makes a brief announcement. Both duelists agree they'll give it their hardest and the song "No Matter What" begins playing in a more-or-less music video style. When it ends, Yu-Gi-Oh plays Celtic Guardian (1400) in Attack Mode. Joey plays Giltia the Kngiht (1850) in Attack Mode (which is a Normal Monster like Flame Swordsman became and the real card is a Fusion Monster called "Giltia the D. Knight"). His attack takes out CG with ease, leaving Yu-Gi-Oh down to 1550 LPs.

Yu-Gi-Oh mentally questions Joey not protecting his monster (what about you? Your monster was weaker than his, Yu-Gi-Oh.) then calls a brief time-out to give Joey some advice. Next he brings out Gaia the Fierce Knight (2300) in Attack Mode and destroys GtK, leaving Joey's score to equal his own. Joey's summoning of Armored Lizard (1200) leaves Yu-Gi-Oh and crew suspicious. Nevertheless, Yu-Gi-Oh summons Summoned Skull (2500) in Attack Mode and destroys AL but Joey remains happy, like he wanted it to happen (he certainly wanted Summoned Skull to be out). It's Joey's turn to teach Yu-Gi-Oh a lesson and a storm begins forming outside. He brings out Flame Swordsman (1800) in Attack Mode and Yu-Gi-Oh learns exactly why he's played as Joey then activates Shield & Sword to switch the monsters' ATKs with their DEF.

With only 1200 ATK, Summoned Skull is destroyed in FS' ATK, leaving Yu-Gi-Oh down to 1150 LPs. Yu-Gi-Oh has no doubt he'll get through FS (especially given his Gaia's ATK is already greater) and brings out Curse of Dragon (2000) in Attack Mode. Then he uses Polymerization for Gaia the Dragon Champion (2600) in Attack Mode and takes out FS, leaving Joey down to 750 LPs. Joey draws and strategizes before playing Red-Eyes Black Dragon (" ") (2400) in Attack Mode. Next he uses Graverobber to take Yu-Gi-Oh's Summoned Skull and bring it to his field (already 1 illegal move, even for the anime, given that Graverobber is a Trap Card and must be set first). Next he summons Copycat (0000) in Attack Mode (2nd illegal move for he already Normal Summoned and didn't play anything allowing this 2nd Normal Summon. He uses Copycat's effect (despite it being shown as a Normal Monster ever since its first appearance) to copy Yu-Gi-Oh's Polymerization and bring out Black Skull Dragon (" ") (3200) in Attack Mode and Pegasus is excited. Joey's attack takes out GtDC and brings Yu-Gi-Oh's score down to 550. While rain begins falling outside, the duel is just getting started!
