Episode 30: Duel Identity (2)

At the duel, Yu-Gi-Oh can't figure out what to do and Yugi denies his 2nd attempt to be helped. Pegasus knows this and Joey asks if it was luck that he beat Mai (it was, actually, given that his Time Wizard is a HUGE gamble). Oops! At 3:06 into the US episode, we can see two copies of both Harpie Lady and Shadow of Eyes, only half of which are actually in play and it would also appear that Harpie's Pet Dragon is shown as a Normal Monster.

Mai learned more from her duel with Joey than any other duel she played. While it's true that Joey had his friends behind him , he also faced with what he saw and now Yu-Gi-Oh is beginning to see this and after recalling a conversation he had with his other self, he's not holding back anymore. He activates Brain Control, giving him control of Harpie's Pet Dragon but Mai protests that it wouldn't turn on its master, even if brainwashed. (The real card costs 800 Life Points to use this effect, which is a higher amount than Yu-Gi-Oh has.) Wait, where did the extra 1050 come from Yu-Gi-Oh's score as shown at around 6:24 into the US episode? Must be a critical scene deletion here because we know he's actually down to just 300 Life Points from last episode.

Yu-Gi-Oh is fully aware of HPD's resistance to attacking its master and sets 1 card before playing Catapult Turtle (1000) in Attack Mode. Using CT's effect, he launches HPD into Mirror Wall, destroying its holographic image and dealing Mai damage equal to half of HPD's ATK, leaving her score down to 850. Mai uses Elegant Egotist to bring out Harpie Lady Sisters (2450, likely from the Cyber Shield, which only goes to one monster in the CG) in Attack Mode but decides not to attack, fearing Yu-Gi-Oh's face down card. However, Yu-Gi-Oh's face down is a Monster Recovery card, returning all of Yu-Gi-Oh's monsters back into his deck along with all cards in his hand and he draws 5 cards, none of which have enough ATK but finds a way around Shadow of Eyes by playing Mystical Elf (2000) in Defense Mode, whom isn't affected by the card for being female. (Sexist, much?) Mai uses Monster Reborn on Harpie's Pet Dragon. Then her Harpies' special attack (which is depicted as Triangle Ecstasy Spark in the CG) takes out Mystical Elf.

Yu-Gi-Oh manages to draw and play Swords of Revealing Light, buying him three more turns. Mai passes her turn so Yu-Gi-Oh brings out Kuriboh (300) in Attack Mode, whom only gets ridicule by Mai and Yu-Gi-Oh tells her it's an important step to his victory. Mai can't do anything and passes once more. Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't have luck getting his card but uses Monster Reborn to revive Gaia the Fierce Knight (2300) in Attack Mode (though at around 15:03 into the US episode, it's Celtic Guardian's on the board not Gaia's with further evidence at 15:08 and 15:10). Yu-Gi-Oh still doesn't draw the right card after Mai's 2nd passed turn.

Mai draws another Harpie and on her next turn, she'll play it and give her HPD 3200 ATK. Yu-Gi-Oh's fate come to his next draw but he has major doubt. What should happen if he fails? Pegasus is shocked by the power he feels next and Mai gets her own shock as Yu-Gi-Oh draws and plays Black Luster Ritual, tributing his monsters for Black Luster Soldier (3000) in Attack Mode. (The CG requires both the Ritual Spell and the Ritual Monster to be in your hand to Ritual Summon.) With nothing left to either revive HPD or otherwise stronger than BLS, she surrenders the duel. She begins walking away but Yu-Gi-Oh thanks her yet she still has plenty to learn about dueling and herself. When they next meet, Yu-Gi-Oh had better be ready!
