Episode 29: Duel Identity (1)

In his room, Yugi is deep in thought when his friends knock on the door before heading off, then splitting up. Mai was beginning to doubt Yugi, now Yu-Gi-Oh even showing up. Bandit Keith mentally says Joey is too dumb to realize he's already lost due to not having his entry card. They enter the dueling room with Pegasus following from the other side of the room shortly after, explaining that if defeated, the winner gets what their heart most desires, within reason and dubbed #1 duelist in the world. Both Mai and Yu-Gi-Oh report to the arena, being the first pairing to duel, and are given the green light. While Yu-Gi-Oh draws his opening hand, Mai mentally says she'll give Yu-Gi-Oh everything she has and brings out Harpie Lady (1300) in Attack Mode, then sets 1 card to end her turn. Yu-Gi-Oh brings out Gaia the Fierce Knight (2300) in Attack Mode and attacks, activating Mai's Mirror Wall Trap Card, halving Gaia's ATK to 1150. For her turn, Mai gives HL Cyber Shield, giving her 500 ATK to 1800. She takes out GtFK, leaving Yu-Gi-Oh down to 1350.

Yu-Gi-Oh draws Summoned Skull, admitting that he is holding back. Oops! At 9:13 into the US episode, you can just see Rose Whip next to Cyber Shield but it hasn't been played yet! He plays Summoned Skull (2500) in Attack Mode, wanting to see Mai's monster survive. Oops again! Summoned Skull has 1200 DEF but it's shown as 2300 at 9:36 into the US episode! Yu-Gi-Oh's attack is stopped by MW, halving its ATK to 1250 as Yu-Gi-Oh learns it's a Continuous Trap Card (provided you can pay the 2000 LP fee each turn with the real card). Yu-Gi-Oh is really off his game today and his friends agree but Yugi cannot take any risks to let his spirit help.

Yu-Gi-Oh sets 1 card to (apparently) end his turn. Mai opts not to attack and instead uses Harpie's Feather Duster to destroy Yu-Gi-Oh's face down Spellbinding Circle (wouldn't that actually give you a better incentive to attack, Mai?). Yu-Gi-Oh switches his Summoned Skull to Defense Mode, then plays Feral Imp (1400) in Defense Mode to end his turn. Mai gives her HL Rose Whip, raising her ATK by 300 to 2100. Oops yet again! HL's ATK is shown at 2100 going to 2400 at 14:49 into the US episode! Yu-Gi-Oh can't do anything and ends his turn (although we never see him do anything so it's only guess). Mai brings out Harpie's Pet Dragon (2000) in Attack Mode, whom gains 300 ATK per HL in play, raising its ATK to 2300 (despite you already having enough ATK to take out SS). After taking out Yu-Gi-Oh's SS, she asks Yu-Gi-Oh the same question Joey asked her but doesn't buy Yu-Gi-Oh's reply.

Joey orders Mai to stop her antics to confuse Yu-Gi-Oh but that's not what she's doing. Yu-Gi-Oh decides to match Mai Trap for Trap by setting 1 card and playing Dark Magician (2100) in Defense Mode. Mai plays Shadow of Eyes (which once again is a Spell Card in the Japanese and is also a Normal Trap in the CG), forcing Dark Magician to attack. (The real card does force the monster to Attack Mode but isn't required to attack. It also negates Flip-Effects from monsters turned to Attack Mode from face down.) Dark Magician attacks, leaving its own ATK down to 1250. Mai uses another HFD to destroy Yu-Gi-Oh's face down card. (The real card, if it wasn't banned, would be at 1 per deck.) She takes out DM, leaving Yu-Gi-Oh down to just 300 LPs. Yu-Gi-Oh cannot lose this match but if Yugi continues to hold his spirit back, everyone loses!
