Episode 43: Surely, You Jest (1)

(Interestingly, there's a custom made intro instead of the usual one and it uses one of the songs not chosen for the intro. The giveaway that it's custom made are the Japanese card images.) Crow gets prepared for the next Dark Signer wave while some players talk about their experiences (and at 2:54 into the US episode, they kept the calculator that is the one released in Japan that has lots of features). Crow appears to warn them to find there own place to hide because he himself is going to the big hole where things will get crazy. At their apartment, Yusei can't believe Kalin is a Dark Signer, recalling a bit of their encounter before the duel and Luna wants to talk but Akiza says he's probably better off not being interrupted. Nevertheless, Luna is not having any second thoughts about fighting the Dark Signers but Yusei is in no mood for a practice duel.

As his sits on a bench, Jack comes up, telling to be strong for the others. When Yusei won't listen, Jack punches him  (yes, they kept the scene). Meanwhile, Akiza loves the garden she's walking through and wishes she could share the joy with her parents, recalling a conversation earlier. Elsewhere, Leo, having just had breakfast an hour ago, cannot pass up the remaining food on the table. Luna is not happy that Leo is just going to chill out while everyone else runs in fear but Leo isn't a Signer so why should he go? Back in the rocky mess, Crow is ready to face his first Dark Signer and immediately concludes that Lazar is one of them and catches him with rope.....or so he thinks as Lazar has slipped away and leads Crow in to an old abandoned warehouse, where they learn of each others' misunderstandings.

Lazar starts to walk away when Crow snares him again, demanding answers but with no answers given, they decide on a duel. Crow begins with Blackwing - Bora the Spear (1700) in Attack Mode. Next he plays Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind (1300) in Attack Mode (by its effect, though it's not limited to itself as implied here). Then he sets 1 card to end his turn and Lazar is going to  make Crow regret not Synchro Summoning that turn. Meanwhile, Jack punches Yusei again, trying to knock some sense into him and wants the Yusei that won the championship title back. Back in the apartment, Leo admits that he's not really a hero, he's the guy that will ruin your chance to sneak up on someone and admits that he thought Luna was holding him back when he now realizes he's the one holding Luna back.

However, Luna is more scared now than she's ever been and needs Leo's support, Signer or not.

As they sit on a hill, Yusei realizes that Jack is right and it's time to focus on his remaining friends. The Signers (and eventually Leo) come together where Yusei and Jack reside as Mina watches. While Jack and Leo get into an argument, Lazar draws and sets 3 cards to end his turn. Crow gets suspicious but draws and attacks anyway, prompting Lazar to activate Imperial Manners, destroying all of Crow's monsters in Attack Mode since he himself has none, but Crow activates Urgent Tuning in an attempt to Synchro Summon but Lazar is ready with Discord, which prevents any Synchro Summons (for 3 turns but they don't tell you that).

With no way to stop IM, Crow loses his monsters but sets 1 card to end his turn, still unconvinced that Lazar isn't a Dark Signer.

Lazar draws and summons Jester Lord (0000) in Attack Mode and since it's the only monster in play, it gains 1000 ATK per Spell and Trap Card on the field, raising its ATK to 3000. Crow isn't about to be taking heavy damage and activates Dust Tornado to destroy Discord but Lazar counters with Imperial Custom, preventing his Continuous Traps from being destroyed. (It actually protects all Continuous Trap Cards from destruction, outside of maintenance, like in this case, Discord's side effect. Also note its artwork is Imperial Manners' art at 21:09 into the US episode.) After JL loses 1000 ATK with the loss of another Spell or Trap on the field, Lazar attacks directly with it, leaving Crow down to 2000 LPs but unwilling to back down and plans on pushing Lazar to the breaking point!
