Episode 9: The Lockdown Duel (1)

At the facility, the guards escort Yusei to the worst part of the building and Chief Armstrong is not far away. Yusei is forced into another room where a man named Alex currently resides and promptly takes the top bunk to relax. While Alex shares his story about his past roommate, Yusei questions whether he was really able to call out the Crimson Dragon. Alex decides to ask Yusei about what he did back with Tanner but Yusei wants rest. However, Yanagi brings Yusei's attention to himself and the duo are brought out to a walkway where Tanner resides but Yanagi figures an error was made as he and Tanner were at the top of the release list. Tanner didn't pay much attention to what he was told when  he was brought to the walkway but knows Chief Armstrong is a bully that does what he wants. In his office, Armstrong is furious that Yusei is a possible Signer and doesn't believe it, recalling his conversation with Goodwin where their duel is arranged.

In their room, Alex shows Yusei why he really wanted the bottom bunk and reveals a hole he created that eventually takes them outside. Yusei is in but wants Tanner and Yanagi in too and Alex accepts, adding that his friend getting them out is an expert hacker. Meanwhile, Jack is circling the track to make the Crimson Dragon appear but to no avail, even after hours of circling and concludes that he must duel Yusei to make the dragon appear. Back in the facility, Armstrong enters Tanner's room claiming to have evidence that Tanner has magazines, a violation of facility rules and despite Tanner's claim that he has no interest in magazines, he's brought out of his cell and beaten up. Armstrong adds that at least one other person got the "magazines" into Tanner's cell and gives the accomplice 1 hour to show or everyone is on lockdown.

Yusei decides to stand up to Armstrong by questioning his authority and Armstrong proposes a duel that night at 8:30 to decide the fate of Tanner and Yusei himself. However, the guards bring Yanagi in and confiscate his deck, prompting Armstrong to give them 1 more hour of freedom before permanent lockdown sets in. Tanner and Yanagi are tossed back into the cell with others coming to his aid, including Yusei, whom learns that Tanner's cards were also taken. Yusei decides not to leave without his friends and Alex decides to do it alone. A few of the cellmates have a brief discussion with Yusei before the hour of the duel arrives. Yusei arrives but with no deck, Armstrong will win by default. However, Yusei DOES have a deck, recalling the conversation he had with the group in which they give him one card each. They're given specific Duel Disks designed to let the player know when they've taken damage to their LPs before Yusei draws and plays Great Phantom Thief (1000) in Defense Mode.

Armstrong draws and plays Iron Chain Repairman (1600) in Attack Mode and takes out GPT, leaving Yusei down to 3700 by ICR's effect. He sets 2 cards to end his turn, leaving Yusei to draw and summon The Kick Man (1300) in Attack Mode. Next he equips it with Stim-Pack, raising its ATK by 700 to 2000. His attack prompts Armstrong to activate Soul Anchor, preventing ICR from being destroyed in battle but still bringing his score down to 3600. However, Armstrong isn't jolted and the crowd suspects cheating on Armstrong's part. Nevertheless, Armstrong draws and plays Iron Chain Snake (800) and uses its effect to equip itself to TKM, lowering TKM's ATK by 800 to 1200. His attack with ICR destroys TKM and leaves Yusei down to 3300, then down to 3000 by ICR's effect. Furthermore, since the monster equipped with ICS was destroyed, Yusei must send the top 3 cards of his deck to the Graveyard (which is equal to TKM's Level but they don't tell you that). Yusei must rise up and continue to duel!
