Episode 91: Don't Fear the Reaper

At an unknown dueling site, a duelist with a clearly evil force attached to him, wins the duel with his big combo. He can't lose with this deck. The duelist, called Lucien by his "dark helper", reminds him of their pact. The "dark helper" tells Lucien he should rest and he does. Jaden and crew see who they think is a duelist but it's the reaper instead. The reaper vanishes. Was it a ghost? Chazz tells Jaden it was the grim reaper and hands Jaden a Normal Monster card, telling him the story of when he was at North Academy.

Back at the hospital, Lucien awakens, asking where his deck is and Jaden hands it to him, saying he needs more sleep. Next Lucien asks where his card went. Chazz tells him it's been taken care of. Lucien asks Jaden if he feels like losing a duel. Chazz reminds him how dangerous the card is as the duelist holding the card loses his/her's soul if he/she loses. (If the reaper grants the holder victory, where's the worry about losing his or her's soul?) Lucien calls to his spirits and Crowler enters with the card in hand. (How'd Crowler get it when we saw Chazz stow it away in his jacket?) Lucien darts out the door, taking his card from Crowler. Jaden follows.

The two of them start a duel. Jaden starts with Elemental Hero Clayman (2000) in Defense Mode, then sets a card to end his turn. Lucien draws, activating Temptation of the Goddess, letting him see Jaden's hand and force him to play a monster and he picks Elemental Hero Sparkman (1600) in Attack Mode. Next he uses Mischief of the Goddess (which is unrelated to the card Prince Ojin used called Mischief of the Time Goddess), letting him see Jaden's hand again and force him to set a Spell Card, which Jaden does. Finally, he uses Slash Draw, forcing him to send the top cards of his deck to the Grave equal to the number of cards on the field, then he draws once more and if it's SD, Jaden takes 1000 damage per card. He draws and Jaden's cards are destroyed but his score drops to 1000.

Jaden had another card face down: Hero Medal, which returns to his hand instead of going to the Grave and he gets to draw 1 card. (The real card is shuffled back into the deck instead of going to the Grave.) Lucien plays Footsteps of the Goddess, forcing Jaden to play Elemental Hero Avian (1000) in Attack Mode and he himself gets to play a monster with less than 1500 ATK and he chooses Invincible Demise Lord (1300) in Attack Mode. Jaden draws and uses Poly to summon Elemental Hero Flame Wingman (2100) in Attack Mode.

(What they don't tell you is that Footsteps of the Goddess prevents either Special Summoned monster from attacking that turn.) Jaden attacks IDL, leaving Lucien with 3100. FW gets to attack directly now. (No, it gets to inflict damage to the controller of the destroyed monster equal to the destroyed monster's ATK, Jaden.) Lucien's score drops to 1900. Due to IDL's effect, it comes back with 3000 ATK. Lucien draws and attacks, destroying FW and leaving Jaden with 100. Jaden draws, playing Dandylion (0300) in Defense Mode, then sets a card to end his turn. Lucien tells Jaden his weed is worthless and draws. He plays Spell Reproduction to toss out 2 Spell Cards and retrieve Slash Draw.

Jaden gives him the "trust yourself" speech. Needless to say, Lucien plays Slash Draw again, tossing the top 3 cards in his deck to the Grave and draws for SD's effect, once again picking up SD but Jaden activated Emergency Evasion, removing from play all the cards on his field. Lucien knew this and attacks but due to EE's other effect, if Jaden draws a monster, he can Special Summon the removed monster.

Since Jaden drew a monster, he revives Dandylion, which gets destroyed, Special Summoning 2 Fluff Tokens (0000 x2) in Defense Mode. Jaden tributes the tokens for Elemental Hero Neos (2500) in Attack Mode. Lucien tells him it's not enough but Jaden equips Neos with Neos Force, raising Neos' ATK by 800 to 2300. He attacks, destroying IDL and wins the duel via NF's other effect. Lucien thanks Jaden and will not lose faith in his cards again.
