Episode 27: Grave Risk (1)

At DA, everyone is sleeping except Syrus, whom climbs down the latter of his bunk bed and walks outside. He opens a door and realizes it's not the bathroom but overhears someone talking to a person in the room talking about Jaden being buried alive. The next day, Banner explains that just as you can combine monsters to create fusion monsters you can also combine two compounds to create something equally impressive...or equally devastating!

Banner announces that they'll be taking a 10-mile trip to collect geological core samples at 7am on Saturday. On Saturday, Banner questions why there are only four for the hike. Syrus says that maybe the others are still sleeping. That's what Chumley would be doing if Banner didn't threaten them with detention for not showing. Jaden says that the secret to getting up early is staying up late. (Sure, Jaden, that and cockroaches are smart >.>) Alexis adds that the ruins are where the shadow games were held and Jaden says that maybe they'll find clues to her brother's disappearance.

The hike begins and the entire way, Chumley complains of being hungry, feet hurting, and hating of crawling and climbing. They're finally here! Jaden suggests they eat and Banner agrees. He gets pizza while the rest get whatever Jaden's holding?! Banner says he needs it to teach them. Funny, he doesn't remember a fur topping and sees Pharaoh has eaten it. Banner asks if they could share their lunch with him but using his "excuse" they say they need the food to learn. Pharaoh wanders off and digs in the sand to what looks to be some kind of tome-like thing, which a green light emits from.

Several more green lights rise out and the sun splits into 3. Chumley says it's been an awesome field trip but Winged Kuriboh says everyone should run. Jaden thinks it's cool but Banner says for everyone to take cover. The dart inside but Jaden decides to stay back and lead the storm away. He awakens to see a ziggurat. They're definitely not in Kansas anymore! A women shows, telling Jaden  to leave for he's in grave danger. She yanks him into a shaded area, saying the others will find him. She orders him to stay in a room but he refuses, saying he wants to see his friends. She assures Jaden that she'll find them but if he leaves, they'll be of no use. He waits,. What's taking her so long?

He hears a cry for help and climbs one of the skinny windows in the room. He sees his friends in sarcophaguses and someone pokes his rear with a spear. Hasn't he ever heard of a handshake? He introduces himself but the others aren't pleased and point their spears towards his head. Jaden tries to ask if he and his friends can leave but Gravekeeper Chief says it's not possible since they've trespassed on his domain. He offers Jaden a duel, which he accepts but only if his friends can come too and GC accepts.

The duel starts and Chief sets a monster in Defense Mode to end his turn. (Note: since Gravekeeper's Chief and Gravekeeper's Curse have the same initials, I'll call Gravekeeper's Chief "Chief" for short.) Jaden plays Elemental Hero Bubbleman (0800) in Attack Mode. With his effect, since he's the only card out on Jaden's field, Jaden gets 2 cards. (" ") Next, he sets 1 card and ends his turn. Chief draws and plays Gravekeeper's Spear Soldier (1500) in Attack Mode. Then, he flips his face down monster, Gravekeeper's Guard (1000) to Attack Mode.

With his effect, Chief can select 1 monster on the field and return it to its owner's hand. He selects Bubbleman, then attacks directly with his monsters, dropping Jaden's score to 1500. Jaden now sees that it's not just about his LPs but about his life. The sarcophaguses close on Jaden's score accordingly. Jaden plays Poly for Elemental Hero Flame Wingman (2100) in Attack Mode and attacks Spear Soldier, destroying it and dropping Chief's score to 3400. Next with FW's effect, he takes Spear Soldier's ATK as damage, decreasing his LPs to 1900. Finally, Jaden plays Wroughtweiler (1200) in Defense Mode to end his turn. Chief switches GG to Defense Mode, then sets another monster to end his turn (although he doesn't say he's ending his turn.) Jaden destroys GG with FW, dropping GC's score to 900.

GC draws and plays Pot of Greed for 2 cards. Next he plays Gravekeeper's Assailant (1500) in Attack Mode. Then he reveals his hidden monster, Gravekeeper's Curse (0800) to Attack Mode and uses it's effect, dealing 500 damage to Jaden, leaving him with 1000 LPs. He then plays Necrovalley, which adds 500 ATK and DEF to his Gravekeeper's monsters, raising Assailant's stats to 2000 and Curse's stats to 1300. He attacks with Assailant. Doesn't he realize that her ATK is less than Wingman's?

GC tells Jaden that her effect lets him change the battle mode of a monster and he chooses FW. He attacks and destroys FW with GA, then destroys Wroughtweiler with GC, activating Wroughweiler's effect, allowing Jaden to retrieve an Elemental Hero and Polymerization but Chief says that Necrovalley negates any card effect targeting the Graveyard. Alexis refuses to believe that it's over for Jaden but Banner disagrees, saying that Jaden's out of monsters while Chief has two. If Jaden doesn't get his game on, they'll be long gone!
