Episode 21: The Duel-Off (1)

Outside DA, Dorothy orders some scuba divers to surface. One does, saying he has found the scoop of the century, Duel Academy. Inside Chancellor Sheppard's office, Crowler asks Sheppard if he's out of his mind. The School Duel is the biggest duel of the year! They cannot take any chances, so Crowler nominates Zane to represent DA but Sheppard tells him that Zane is third-year and NA is using a first-year duelist. Sheppard asks if it's okay with Zane and Zane says it is. Zane then nominates Jaden Yugi to represent DA and Banner agrees. Crowler mumbles on how each time Jaden does well, he makes himself look bad. There must be another duelist! He then suggests Bastion Misawa to represent DA and Sheppard asks for a Duel-Off.

Meanwhile, the mysterious scuba diver slinks into the Slifer Red locker room and pulls out a SR uniform. He's gotta blend in! Back inside the classroom, Banner tells Jaden he will duel Bastion and the winner represents DA in the School Duel. "May the best man win" Jaden says to Bastion but Bastion "corrects" him by saying best deck and he can assure Jaden that that deck will be his. He's been formulating a new set of cards ever since his duel with Chazz. So it's finished? Bastion says it's not but it will be soon.

He walks off. In the halls of DA, the new Slifer Red student tries to get Obelisk Blue and Ra Yellow students to talk to him but both of them push him away and designate a "name" for him. Jaden and the gang see him.  Jaden welcomes him and decides to show him around. After eating, he picks up one of his cards and sets it down, revealing that his cards are laid out on the floor. Most of the cards have been redesigned/changed for US as shown at around 5:45 into the episode.

Syrus says Jaden's deck looks good but is he nervous? Nope, Jaden's excited. The SR student sees a Skyscraper card and picks it up, remembering that the card ruined dueling for him. Does he like the Skyscraper card too? No, he'd have to be a duelist first! He says his name is Girard and says that he hates dueling because he's just isn't good at it. Chumley agrees but he just isn't good at it. He tells them about a rumor that's been going around about students missing. Does he mean the Abandoned Dorm?

Jaden tells him the story of the Abandoned Dorm and Girard heads out to it. Alexis, meanwhile, places a rose, near the entrance to the AD. Girard greets her and asks about whether the AD is where the students disappeared but Alexis tells him it's not for his amusement. He's just curious but she tells him he can stay curious and walks off. He doesn't know what her problem is but he's going to get the story and snaps several pics of the dorm. Inside his dorm, Bastion still cannot solve the problem that is Jaden's deck. He has to stop Jaden's monsters before they fuse.

He finally gets it, saying that the code of Jaden's cards has been cracked. The next day, Jaden eats, saying that the hardest part it to chew before you swallow. At the OB arena, Crowler introduces both duelists. Girard enters the library to find out more info on the missing students. Back at the arena, Bastion draws and plays Carboneddon (0600) in Defense Mode and ends his turn. Jaden plays Elemental Hero Burstinatrix (1200) in Attack Mode and attacks, destroying Carboneddon, then sets a card to end his turn.

Bastion plays Oxygeddon (1800) in Attack Mode and attacks but Jaden activates Hero Barrier, which can negate the attack of an opponent's monster if he controls an Elemental Hero monster. Bastion congratulates him, then thinks that once he plays his card, it won't matter how well Jaden plays and sets the card face down to end his turn. Jaden plays Elemental Hero Sparkman (1600) in Attack Mode and equips him with Spark Blaster, allowing Sparkman to change the mode of one of Bastion's monsters and he chooses Oxygedon. Oops! The graphic for Oxygeddon's DEF at 15:01 into the episode shows his ATK!

He attacks Oxygeddon with Burstinatrix but Bastion tells him that he needs to check-up on Chemistry for Fire and Oxygen don't mix (actually they do in that the fire needs oxygen to survive and the more you add, the bigger the fire becomes.) Since Oxygeddon was destroyed by a Pyro-Type monster, it takes a toll on both players' LPs. (In the real game, Burstinatrix is a Warrior-Type monster.) Their LPs drop to 3200. Jaden then attacks directly with Sparkman, leaving Bastion with 1600.

Guess Bastion needs to go back to the drawing board but Bastion disagrees and plays Hydrogeddon (1600) in Attack Mode. He attacks and destroys Burstinatrix, dropping Jaden's score to 2800. Next he uses Hydrogeddon's ability, letting him summon another Hydrogeddon and he has one in is deck. Then he plays Living Fossil, letting him revive Oxygeddon in Attack Mode but it loses 1000 ATK and  its effect is negated, bringing it's ATK to 800. Next he plays Bonding - H2O, allowing him to play Water Dragon (2800) in Attack Mode.

He ends his turn. (Why didn't he attack? Not only would it have destroyed Sparkman but it would've also damaged Jaden's LPs by 1200.) Nonetheless, Jaden draws and uses Poly but Bastion activates Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell, which by discarding a Spell Card negates Poly and prevents Jaden from using the card for the rest of the duel. Jaden can compute it any way he likes but it's over.
