Episode 22: The Duel-Off (2)

At the library, Girard thinks if he can crack the code he can get access to all of the student files. He gets in and is amazed at the students whom have disappeared. He thinks there is something suspicious about not having a forward address. Back at the duel, Syrus says he's afraid to watch (although he is) and Chumley says it's not all bad since Jaden has more LPs. Alexis tells Jaden to fight back and Zane says perhaps they've underestimated Bastion, he's been dueling like a pro.

Jaden switches Sparkman to Defense Mode and ends his turn. "Not much he can do without his Fusion Monster, eh?" Bastion says tauntingly to Jaden. Jaden disagrees and says he just has to find a new plan, which'll be tough but he's up for it. Bastion plays Mathematician (1500) in Attack Mode and his effect forces Bastion to send a card from his deck to his Grave but if he's destroyed in battle, Bastion can add a card from his deck to his hand.

He attacks Jaden's monsters with his monsters and destroys them. Just when Syrus thought it couldn't get any worse! Meanwhile Girard is thinking about selling the story of the missing students for a fortune but it may cost a scandal to ruin DA but he's not worried. He still cannot get Jaden out of his head, hears a cheering crowd and walks over. He sees the duel as Jaden plays Elemental Hero Bubbleman (0800) in Attack Mode and by his effect, Jaden gets to draw twice since Bubbleman's the only card out.

(The real card's effect is different in the TCG.) He then plays Bubble Blaster, raising Bubbleman's ATK by 800, putting him at 1600. He attacks and destroys Mathematician, triggering its effect, letting Bastion draw 1 card. (Actually he's allowed to add a card from his deck to his hand.) Bastion's score drops to 1500. Jaden sets 2 cards face down and plays Mirage of Nightmare and ends his turn. Bastion draws and with MoN, Jaden can draw until his hand holds 4.

Then Jaden reveals Emergency Provisions, which by sending a Spell or Trap to his Grave, he gets back 1000 LPs and sends Mirage, increasing his score to 3800. Girard is impressed by this move, then says that he's not enjoying the duel. Bastion uses Pot of Greed for 2 cards then states that Carboneddon's effect activates, which since there are 10 cards in his Graveyard after Carboneddon, he can remove it from play and summon Hyozanryu (2100) in Attack Mode. He attacks with his two monsters, destroying Bubbleman and Bubble Blaster and dropping Jaden's score to 1800. Jaden activates Hero Signal, which activated only when an Elemental Hero monster was destroyed (In the real game it has to be destroyed in battle). He can play an Elemental Hero monster from his hand or deck and he chooses Elemental Hero Clayman (0800) in Attack Mode.

(The real card can only choose a level 4 or lower Elemental Hero monster.) Bastion sets a card and ends his turn. Girard forgets how much fun dueling can be. Jaden uses The Warrior Returning Alive to retrieve Bubbleman, which he plays in Attack Mode. Next, he uses Bubble Shuffle, which switches Bubbleman and an opponent's monster to Defense Mode (he chooses Water Dragon) and he can play an Elemental Hero monster from his hand by tributing Bubbleman, so he plays Elemental Hero Bladedge (2600) in Attack Mode. Syrus says Bladedge's ATK isn't enough to defeat Water Dragon but Jaden says it is and plays Skyscraper, which raises the ATK of an Elemental Hero monster by 1000 if it battles a weaker monster so Jaden attacks and destroys Water Dragon, reducing Bastion's LPs to 500 by Bladedge's effect.

Bastion activates Water Dragon's effect, letting him play 2 Hydrogeddons and 1 Oxygeddon, which he plays in Defense Mode, then reveals his Trap Card Last Magnet, which becomes an Equip Card to the monster that destroyed one of his monsters in battle, or in this case, Bladedge, and lowers its ATK by 800, leaving Bladedge with 1800. Jaden reminds Bastion that Clayman can still attack and does so, destroying Oxygeddon. Bastion plays Litmus Doom Ritual, which he tributes his two Hydrogeddons for Litmus Doom Swordsman (0000) in Attack Mode.

"It has zero attack points!" Syrus points out but Bastion points out that LDS is unaffected by Trap Cards, cannot be destroyed in battle and when there is a face up Trap Card, his ATK and DEF become 3000. He attacks and destroys both of Jaden's monsters, putting Jaden's score to 1300, then plays A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon, which by returning a Level 5 or higher monster to his hand, all Spell and Trap Cards are destroyed. Jaden plays Elemental Hero Wildheart (1500) in Attack Mode but Bastion activates Spirit Barrier, reducing any Battle Damage to 0 while he as a monster out and with a Trap Card out, LDS's stats rise to 3000.

Next, Jaden plays Cyclone Boomerang, raising Wildheart's ATK by 500, bring it to 2000. He attacks and destroys Wildheart, putting his score to 300 but when CB is destroyed and sent to the Grave, all Spell and Trap Cards are destroyed and Bastion takes 500 damage for each one (The real card only deals 100 damage for each Spell and Trap Car destroyed), dropping Bastion's score to 0. Everyone cheers except Crowler, who asks if this "slacker" ever loses. Inside the halls, Alexis confronts Girard and asks why he's here and Girard explains it's not what he originally thought. He found the duelist inside him, the duelist whom he thought was long gone. Now he wants to help find all the missing students, including Alexis' brother.
