Episode 8: For the Sake of Syrus

At Duel Academy, Jaden remembers his chat with Alexis about Zane. He then questions about spelling Zane with to N's or 1. Crowler catches him, reads his request form and tells him he must be joking. Actually he isn't. He wants to take Zane on to over come Syrus' confidence. Crowler says that there will be no duel and rips the request form to pieces. Back at the dorm, Syrus stares at his Power Bond card and remembers what Zane had said. He's going to let everyone down and they're going to lose! Meanwhile, up in tree, Chumley builds his deck, saying fifteen koala cards ought to do. Jaden arrives, mumbling about how Crowler denied his request form when he sees Chumley, who drops his cards on the ground from being startled.

He sees Chumley's cards, which Chumley adds they so rule and asks about a pick-up duel against them. Jaden gets an idea and races off. Chumley asks where he's going and Jaden tells him the Obelisk Blue Dorm. Jaden arrives and is shoved backward. What's their problem? They don't have a problem but Jaden sure will if he doesn't beat it! The Obelisk Blue students add that Zane wouldn't waste his time with someone like Jaden, who's probably still wet from behind the ears due to Pre-Duel School. Jaden says he isn't but one of the students throws water on him. Now he is! Back near their dorm, Chumley asks Jaden what he's going to do. He'll tell Chumley what he's not going to do and that's give up. He'll get Zane to duel one way or another! Inside the dorm, Jaden discovers what he thinks is Syrus in bed but there's just a pillow.

Chumley sees a note, which tells them that Syrus has left Duel Academy and that he would only hold them back if he stayed. They're going to stop him! Yeah, right after dinner, Chumley says. Jaden disagrees for if they don't hurry it'll be Syrus' last day! They call out his name and meanwhile Syrus is preparing to leave Duel Academy. Jaden's deck glows and Winged Kuriboh emerges. Chumley catches up, tired, saying that first no grilled cheese and now he's hearing things. Winged Kuriboh tells Jaden that he can find Syrus and races off. Elsewhere, Zane looks out into the ocean and Alexis shows up, saying that there's no sign of her brother.

Zane tells her not to give up, she'll find him someday. Alexis sees Syrus and Jaden darts after him as he gets into the raft. Jaden lands on the raft but they end up in the water. Syrus exclaims he can't swim. You went into the ocean, that makes sense! says Jaden with sarcasm. Chumley rushes in only to discover it's shallow. Syrus and Jaden stand up and Syrus questions why Jaden stopped him, he stinks! Jaden tries to reassure him that he must believe in himself but Syrus says he's a lost cause. Zane shows. So, you're dropping out? he asks Syrus. Yeah, kinda, Syrus responds. Well it's about time! H's Syrus' brother how can he say that! Jaden orders a duel! Zane agrees, after all it's been a while since he went slumming.

In a dark location, the duel between Zane and Jaden begins. His big brother dueling against his best friend? He doesn't know how this could turn up good! Jaden starts and summons Elemental Hero Avian (1000) in Attack Mode. He sets a card face down and ends his turn. That's all, huh? Zane asks, drawing his card. He summons Cyber Dragon (2100) in Attack Mode. How can he play a level 5 monster out on his very first turn? Zane explains that it's because it's his first turn that he can summon it.

He plays Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Jaden's face down card. That was fast! Not as fast as his Life Point meter will go down! He attacks, destroying Avian and putting Jaden's score to 2900. Syrus warned Jaden that Zane was good! Next Zane activates Different Dimension Capsule, allowing him to take a card from his deck, place it in the capsule and in two turns, add it to his hand. It's gotta be the coolest card in his deck! Jaden can't wait to see what's going to come out of there! Syrus can, it's not going to be pretty!

Zane ends his turn. Jaden thinks he'd better make it count because he's starting to think that Zane may be as good as everyone says he is, he may even be better but that does not mean he's better than Jaden! Jaden draws and plays Poly to roll out Elemental Hero Thunder Giant (2400) in Attack Mode. (" ") Since his special ability destroys a monster whose original ATK is less than his own, Zane's Cyber Dragon is vaporized! He attacks directly with Thunder Giant but Zane doesn't move or yell. He could at least kinda flinch! Jaden sets a card, saying  that maybe it'll get to him later. Yeah, if Jaden lasts long enough to use it! Syrus thinks to himself. Nice moves, Zane says and with his field now empty again he can summon another Cyber Dragon... Oops! At 13:02 into the episode, the Japanese version has Cyber Dragon being placed on the second from left slot when it should be the third from right slot since the dub later shows it in the same spot....or better yet, two! He plays Monster Reborn to bring back his first Cyber Dragon.

Neither will be for long in present form as he plays Poly for Cyber Twin Dragon (2800) in Attack Mode. One was bad enough! Chumley says. Zane tells Jaden that his Cyber Twin Dragon can attack twice in around, which means double the trouble for Jaden's monster and his Life Points! He attacks but Jaden activates A Hero Emerges, which normally allows Zane to pick one of the cards Jaden's holding and if it would be a monster, Jaden would get to summon it but since only has one, which he shows, it's Wroughtweiler, whose card art has been completely redesigned for US when revealed at 14:03 into the episode. (I should also note the wrong SFX was used when AHE was activated.)

He summons Wroughtweiler (1200) in Defense Mode and his monsters are destroyed by Cyber Twin. When Wroughtweiler is destroyed, Jaden can take Polymerization and an Elemental Hero monster from his Graveyard to his hand, just when Zane could stop worrying about them! Zane says he doesn't worry. You are good! Jaden says to Zane. Zane says Jaden is too! Since when does Zane give props? Syrus asks to himself.

Jaden summons Elemental Hero Bubbleman (0800) in Attack Mode and since he's the only monster on Jaden's field, he gets to draw 2 cards. (The real Bubbleman only lets you draw 2 cards if your hand and field are empty.) He draws Transcendent Wings and Winged Kuriboh! His LV10 monster would turn Zane's Cyber Twin Dragon into Cyber junk and its ATK would be dealt to Zane as damage, which would be enough to drop Zane's LPs down to 0 but he cannot summon any more monsters this turn so he plays Poly to bring out Elemental Hero Mudballman (3000) in Defense Mode.

Zane draws and his DDC lets him add his card to his hand now. He plays De-Fusion, to return his 2 Cyber Dragons to his field. Then he activates Power Bond to summon Cyber End Dragon (4000) in Attack Mode. Plus, thanks to Power Bond, its ATK doubles, putting its ATK to 8000 and thanks to Cyber End's effect, if it attacks a monster in Defense Mode, the difference between its ATK and its attack target's DEF comes out of it's controller's Life Points. Just hang tough! Chumley says.

If he can survive this round, he'll win because of Power Bond's nasty side-effect, which deals the controller of Power Bond damage equal to the summoned monster's original ATK. Zane attacks, destroying Mudballman and wiping out the rest of Jaden's Life Points. Alexis can't believe it...Jaden lost! Jaden thanks Zane for a great duel. Whilst walking away with Zane, Alexis asks what he thinks and Zane says Syrus found good friends. Behind them, Jaden says to go back and work on their decks. Then his, Syrus and Chumley's stomachs growl and Chumley says he could use a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches. Not if I scarf them all down first!
