Episode 173: Fighting for a Friend (5)

Inside town, the search for Joey continues and the trio find themselves wondering where the Seal was activated. Elsewhere, Kaiba summons Blue-Eyes White Dragon to destroy the army of Orichalcos Soldiers and blows them away but they quickly reappear. Kaiba tries again and they reappear and one of them snares Mokuba so Kaiba plays his Legendary Dragon (and at 3:12 into the Japanese episode, Blue-Eyes isn't there and Critias is one card slot over to the left). Critias attacks and destroys several of the soldiers but some still remain and while Kaiba declares another attack, Mai taunts Joey and isn't moved by Joey's excuse (and she's right. Joey could've waited until he was fully rested to duel again). Joey draws and plays Swordsman of Landstar (1200) in Defense Mode, then sets 2 cards after a few attempts to insert one of the cards.

Mai is disappointed that Joey talks about his new monster but doesn't play it and is sick of Joey's lectures. She attacks but Joey activates Double Magical Arm Bind (changed perhaps to reflect to the change to Magic Arm Shield in the CG because it wasn't called this before), letting him tribute 2 of his monsters to gain control of 2 of Mai's monsters. Mai still has two Harpies left and attacks once more but Joey activates Vow of Tribe (whose artwork at 6:26 into the Japanese episode is vastly different), preventing the same monsters on both sides of the field from attacking (and it's not a Continuous Trap as Joey suggests). At last, Mai compliments Joey on a good move but doesn't understand why Joey doesn't give into his anger like the others but uses what Valon said as a bigger reason to crush Joey.

Joey draws and tributes his 2 Cyber Harpies and Swordsman of Landstar for Gilford the Lightning (2800) in Attack Mode. Due to Gilford's effect, since it was Tribute Summoned with 3 monsters, all of Mai's monsters are destroyed, leaving her defenseless. His direct attack leave Mai down to 800 LPs. Mai draws and uses Card of Sanctity to force both players to draw until their hands hold six cards.  Next she uses Monster Reborn to revive one of her Cyber Harpies in Attack Mode. Then she uses Elegant Egotist to bring out two more Cyber Harpies (The real card brings out either 1 Harpie Lady or 1 Harpie Lady Sisters and Mai wouldn't be able to bring out any more Cyber Harpies or Harpie Ladies because the card is limited to 3, meaning any combination of monsters named Harpie Lady.) Then she plays Harpie Lady Phoenix Formation (and during which, they've added more Cyber Harpie cards to her duel disk as shown at 10:33 into the US episode) to destroy up to 3 of Joey's monsters, leaving Joey defenseless and down to 800 LPs as well.

Joey draws and uses Warrior Returning Alive (The Warrior Returning Alive in the CG) to retrieve Blue Flame Swordsman from his Graveyard in Attack Mode. Next he uses Dark Dragon Ritual to discard his Gearfried the Iron Knight and summon Knight of Dark Dragon (1900) in Attack Mode. Furthermore, he tributes KoDD for Red-Eyes B. Dragon (2400) in Attack Mode. Then he plays his Legendary Dragon and combines it with Red-Eyes to form Red-Eyes Black Dragon Sword, which he equips to BFS, raising its ATK by 1000 to 2800. He attacks with BFS, destroying a Cyber Harpie and leaving Mai down to 300 LPs. Finally he sets 2 cards to end his turn. However, he's struggling to remain standing and Mai uses Harpie's Feather Duster to destroy all of Joey's Spells and Traps, returning BFS' ATK to 1800. Next, she uses Spell Reproduction to discard 2 Spell Cards and retrieve another Spell Card in her Graveyard.

She picks and reuses Harpie Lady Phoenix Formation and destroys all of Joey's monsters but Joey's score remains unchanged as due to BFS' first effect, he can transfer its ATK to another monster and he chose one of Mai's Harpies, leaving its own ATK at 0 and since it was destroyed, BFS lets Joey bring out Flame Swordsman (1800) in Attack Mode. Mai is sick of taking backseat to Joey but she's still taking backseat and this time to Dartz, whom promised her power.  All Joey can do is set 1 card to end his turn. Mai attacks Joey directly with her powered up CH but Joey activates Skull Dice to divide its ATK by the die result. The roll yields a 2, halving CH's ATK to 2050, still enough to destroy FS and leave Joey down to 550 LPs (though at 17:08 into the Japanese episode, his score drops to 500). She goes to attack directly but stops, unable to continue, remembering the times beforehand.

Nevertheless, Joey considers Mai the winner and he collapses on the ground, too exhausted to continue. Joey is glad Mai didn't have to lose her soul and the duel was one of the greatest he ever fought. Mai announces in despair that Joey is gone and is set free from the Orichalcos but Joey's soul ends up on the wall. Elsewhere, Timaeus and Critias call out and Kaiba concludes that a glitch is to blame. Mai holds Joey in her arms and cries, wondering how she could leave Joey for a person who promised her power. She heads off on motorcycle, determined to make Dartz regret the day he met her. She arrives inside and Raphael is waiting.  Down below, the gang arrive where Joey's two duels took place and are shocked to see the results. Joey's soul belongs to Dartz!
