Episode 174: Grappling with a Guardian (1)

At the site where Joey's latest duels conclude, the group struggle to realize that Joey beat Valon and then Mai showed up. Yami knows whom to really blame and darts off. He enters Paradias HQ and learns that they've been expecting him. An elevator moves to the ground floor and when the doors open, a lifeless Mai Valentine slumps to his arms. All Yami can conclude is that she was involved in a duel that she lost and after putting her body aside, he boards the elevator determined to put an end to it all. On the roof, Raphael is waiting for their rematch but Yami is here to see Dartz. Nevertheless, Raphael hands Yami the Claw of Hermos card and explains that he beat Mai after Mai beat Joey because of his distrust in Mai as Mai turned on them after beating Joey. Raphael doesn't care whether his soul is taken or not because of his commitment to Dartz. Yami protests that Dartz is just using them for his own selfish needs and is told that Yami's side won't exist once the Great Leviathan is revived.  Down below, Tristan can't believe Yami took off and he and Tea` encounter Kaiba, whom isn't thrilled to see them but there's a swarm of evil gerbil-like creatures running towards them.

They use the nearby Fire Escape to hoist themselves high enough to be out of the gerbils' path and Kaiba can only conclude that Dartz is responsible. Back at the duel, the stakes are set, cards are shuffled and a storm begins as Raphael plays Guardian Treasure, throwing out all cards in his hand, drawing 2 cards and being able to draw another card during each of his following Draw Phases.  Next he summons Backup Gardna (2200) in Defense Mode and sets 1 card to end his turn. All Yami can do is play Queen's Knight (1600) in Defense Mode so  Raphael uses Gravity Axe (Gravity Axe - Grarl in the CG) to bring out Guardian Grarl (2500) in Attack Mode and equips it to GG, raising its ATK by 500 to 3000 (once again through BG's effect, which isn't stated). His attack destroys Yami's Queen's Knight.

Yami uses Monster Reborn on Queen's Knight, then summons King's Knight (1600) and then Jack's Knight (1900) in Attack Mode by KK's effect. Next he plays Brave Attack and Raphael remembers it from Yami's duel with Gurimo. Due to BA's effect, Yami's monsters' ATKs are added together and will destroy them and Raphael's GG. However as Yami attacks to execute his plan, Rapahel activates Guardian Force (which at 14:42 into the US episode not only has different artwork but it's Divine Wind's artwork), negating Yami's Brave Attack since there are no Guardian monsters in his Graveyard. Yami has no choice but to end his turn and needs a new strategy.

Raphael draws and equips his Backup Gardna (not Guardian as he says from 15:29 to 15:33 into the US episode) with Butterfly Dagger (Butterfly Dagger - Elma in the CG), giving BG 300 more ATK to 800. With that, he plays Guardian Elma (1300) in Attack Mode, one of many monsters Yami has never seen before and due to her effect, Raphael gets back his Guardian Shield, which he equips to her, raising her DEF by 300 to 1500, then moves Butterfly Dagger to her by BG's effect to raise her ATK by 300 to 1600. His attacks leave Yami down to 1 monster and 2500 LPs. Yami draws and uses Five-Star Twilight  to tribute his Level 5 Jack's Knight for The Kuriboh Brothers (300 x5) in Attack Mode. Then he discards a Trap Card to make GG lose 1500 ATK to bring it down to 1500. Furthermore, he tributes them for Kuribabylon (1500) in Attack Mode. Then he uses Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Gravity Axe and leave GG down to 1000 ATK. He then attacks with Kuribabylon but Raphael uses the effect of GS to pay 500 Life Points and negate the attack, bringing his score down to 3500. (He's actually just taking the Battle Damage from the attack by destroying Guardian Shield and preventing the monster's destruction in battle.)

Raphael draws and plays the Seal of Orichalcos despite Yami's pleas and on the ground floor, the rest of the group find Mai lifeless near the elevator. Back on the, roof, the Seal forms and the rest of the group arrive to see it take effect. Raphael is evil now and what will Yami do?
