Episode 63: Playing with a Parasite (1)

Waiting beside a clock, Mai mutters that Joey should've arrived 10 minutes earlier. When he arrives, Joey finds out he's in last place in terms of Locator Card amounts. Mai reminds them that they won't get to the finals by standing around and they split. Yugi knows Marik is after him and will be ready but Marik is watching his every move through a mime on a bench. Outside Solomon's game shop, Tea` learns that Yugi already took off to get a head start on the tournament and fears she'll never get to see him duel and sees right through Tristan's excuse for being late. Nevertheless, Solomon agrees to help. Meanwhile, while walking about to find his next opponent, Joey runs into a blue-haired kid, asking for an autograph for her friend Jessica but also requests to try on his Duel Disk.

When Joey tries a speech, he doesn't get far when he notices that the kid is stealing his Duel Disk and gives chase. Happening to be up on the walkway, Tristan, Tea` and Solomon notice the chase and Tristan intercepts. They find out the kid just wanted to be in the tournament and some guy with bug eyes and a blue beetle hairstyle stole his deck. The group realize the description matches Weevil Underwood and dart off to find him but we see that the kid was deceiving them and he heads back to his apparent "boss" Weevil himself, whom is delighted that Joey fell for the trick. However, the kid wants his rare card but is disappointed that he's given a Gokibore card, which everyone in town has (though at the time of this episode's first airing, the card wasn't out in the US so that wouldn't technically be true here). Since the kid isn't satisfied, Weevil agrees to make matters worse by spraying him with a sticky webby goop before walking away. With the trap set, Joey won't stand a chance!

At the hospital, Serenity notices a door open but not whom opened it and the nurse enters, asking his whereabouts, calling him Kenta but is told Serenity doesn't know where he is but figures he's probably scared. When the coast is clear, she tells Kenta he can come out, explaining that she heard his breathing under the bed. She explains that she didn't turn him in because of also being scared of some of the tests performed but they aren't as bad as you might think. Kenta asks what he can do to repay her and is told to look at the Battle City website because his brother is dueling. At the fountain, they find Weevil, whom has no knowledge of stealing cards and Joey stops Tristan from resorting to violence by challenging Weevil to a duel.

With Tea` grossed out by Weevil's warning of having her finger bitten by an insect, the duel commences with Joey playing Swordsman of Landstar (500) in Attack Mode and setting 1 card. Weevil understandably ridicules Joey's monster before playing Flying Kamakiri #1 (1400) in Attack Mode and attacks but Joey counters with Shield & Sword, switching the ATK of both monsters, destroying FK#1 and leaving Weevil down to 3700 LPs. (The real S&S isn't a Quick-Play Spell so it can't be activated this way.) However, FK#1's effect is activated, letting Weevil bring out Flying Kamakiri #2 (1500) in Attack Mode. Back at the hospital, Kenta finds Joey's duel with Weevil and is worried about Joey's chances but Serenity assures him that he'll defeat Weevil after coming second place at Duelist Kingdom. Joey draws and plays Jinzo (2400) in Attack Mode by tributing his SoL.

His attack takes out FK#2 and leaves Weevil's score down to 2800. Weevil draws and sets 1 monster in Defense Mode. Joey attacks Weevil's hidden monsters, which turns out to be Flying Leech Kiseitai (800) in Defense Mode, which attaches itself to Jinzo and will give Weevil half of Jinzo's ATK each turn. (The real card's name is just "Kiseitai".) Once again, Weevil sets a monster and gets his LP boost to 4000 by his monster's effect. Joey attacks, revealing the new hidden monster as Skull-Mark Ladybug (1500) in Defense Mode, giving Weevil 500 more LPs for a new total of 4500. (The real card gives you 1000 Life Points when sent to the Graveyard.) Oops! As Weevil explains his monster's effect, at 11:45 into the US episode, S-ML is a Normal Monster throughout its passage across the screen! Weevil sets a monster, then takes his score up to 5700 with his monster's effect. Joey summons Panther Warrior (2000) in Attack Mode and because it needs a tribute to attack, he tributes Jinzo and takes out Weevil's hidden Pinch Hopper (1200) in Defense Mode.

Due to PH's not-yet-explained effect, Weevil brings out Larvae Moth (500) in Attack Mode, a card all to familiar to Joey, (The real card has to be played by tributing Petit Moth equipped with Cocoon of Evolution on the 2nd turn after the card was equipped.) For his own turn, Weevil equips his LM with Cocoon of Evolution (0000) in Attack Mode and gloats about the monster it will soon become. Next, he activates Reckless Parasite to bring out the Parasite Paracide (500) from Joey's Deck in Attack Mode and Joey realizes that the kid he encountered was working for Weevil and probably put this Parasite card in his deck. Despite Tristan and Tea`s' protest that it's cheating, Weevil says it isn't his fault Joey didn't check his deck first. Nevertheless, Joey plays Tiny Guardian (1400) in Attack Mode and along with Panther Warrior, becomes infected by the Parasite card. (The real card is called "Little-Winguard" in the CG and is an Effect Monster that lets you change its battle position once per turn.) Joey learns that he cannot tribute a Parasite-infected monster so PW can't attack (what about the Parasite Paracide card itself?)

Joey points out that Weevil didn't put his CoE into Defense Mode and attacks but Weevil activates Insect Barrier, preventing all of Joey's monsters that are now Insects from attacking. (Like S&S, Insect Barrier can't be activated this way as it's a Continuous Spell in the CG.) While he waits for his Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth to emerge, Weevil plays Leghul (300) in Attack Mode and attacks directly by its effect, leaving Joey down to 3700 LPs. Oops! At 18:26 into the US episode, Leghul has 500 DEF when we just saw at 18:24 that it has 350 DEF!

Joey puts his monsters into Defense Mode and (apparently) ends his turn so Weevil attack him directly again, leaving Joey's score at 3400. Joey passes his next two turns and Weevil direct attacks to leave Joey down to 3100 LPs.  Tristan is getting tired of hearing Weevil's talk about his moth (and understandably so). Joey summons Alligator's Sword (1200) in Defense Mode and is all ready to face PUGM but the two of them will see just how ready he is as Weevil summons Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth (3500) in Attack Mode it's the instrument of Joey's destruction and it's all over for Joey!
