Titanic History: The Truth (Page 5)

What was Titanic?
R.M.S Titanic (aka Royal Mail Steamer/Steamship) Titanic was an ocean liner that sailed from April 10th 1912 at Southampton, England to what was intended to be New York City, but sank on April 14/15th 1912. She was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland and was intended to be part of a trio of sister ships for White Star Line.

Fact #5: Staircases
One of Titanic and Olympic's more well-known features.

1. There were actually two Grand Staircases, one forward and one aft.
2. The forward staircase goes down 5 decks and features 3 elevators and the purser's office.

3. The D-Deck landing goes to the First Class Dining Saloon
4. A bronze cherub is on both staircases at one of the landings.
5. The aft staircases only goes down a few Decks and is less luxurious.
6. Both staircases on the two ships were largely identical (and only Olympic's were photographed).

7. The floor was decked out in linoleum and carved oak columns were on each level.
8. Contrary to popular belief, the staircase had no light source.
9. The forward staircase had an oval-shaped dome whereas the aft staircase's was circular (and was found in the wreck's debris field).

10: Olympic's Grand Staircase was later painted green.
