Titanic History: The Truth (Page 6)
What was Titanic? R.M.S Titanic (aka Royal Mail Steamer/Steamship) Titanic was an ocean liner that sailed from April 10th 1912 at Southampton, England to what was intended to be New York City, but sank on April 14/15th 1912. She was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland and was intended to be part of a trio of sister ships for White Star Line. Fact #6: Propulsion The machinery that helped the Olympic Class sail through the ocean. 1. The on board engines were a bit of a mixed bag, two triple expansion steam engines, a turbine engine and 29 boilers 2. The outer steam engines powered the two outer propellers. 3. The turbine engine was exclusively for the central propeller and couldn't reverse. 4. Each of the outer engines was around 4 stories tall and were bolted to the double bottom hull 5. Half of each steam engine broke off during the sinking and is on the seabed. 6. 24 of the 29 boilers were double-ended, but all of them added up to the ~600 tons of coal used per day. 7. The engines provided the ship with around 60,000 horsepower. Sources https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4begc_U8ygI https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/an-olympic-class-propulsion-system.html |
