Episode 1: Go with the Flow (1)
We find a boy walking along a narrow path to a door that will give any that opens the door great power but with great power comes great risk. He wants to have a think on it but his step backwards causes the rocks underneath to give way and he falls, ending up out of bed in reality. When he comes to, his clock indicates he's late and he scrambles to get ready to leave. We find a girl working on a story with the boy coming downstairs asking why she didn't wake him, revealing her name as Kari. She's a news reporter not his babysitter and should act like someone who is in middle school. He attempts to head out but his grandma wants a kiss and won't take no for an answer. The intro rolls (with a rather catchy tune I might add) and there's plenty of new monsters and characters (and note the card backs being practically identical to the CG card backs).
In a town of sorts, there are robotic trash collectors and our main character uses one for a boost before encountering his friend Bronk, whom also reveals that the other boy is Yuma. They agree to have a race but Bronk uses the robotic trash collector as well and Yuma is knocked to the pavement, leaving Bronk the unofficial winner of the race while the trash collectors fail to understand about Yuma's Deck of cards. Up above, two more characters appear on an overhead monorail and one of them talks to a green-haired girl named Tori about Yuma needing new cards with the litterbots (the robotic trash collectors as I'd called them earlier) mistakenly ID'ing Yuma's cards as trash (to be fair, in the CG, most of them ARE trash).
At their town's school, Yuma isn't fairing too well and explains to Tori that he loves doing dares because he feels to be great, you have to take chances. They look at the key Yuma's parents found on an expedition but Yuma feels it won't work on Tori as it's a part of himself. His excitement disturbs the class but he's especially excited for Duel Period and when that time comes, he activates what is known as a Duel Gazer, an eye-patch of sorts that allows duels to take place. Monsters fly by (and at 5:59 into the episode, we can see the new LP and ATK/DEF graphics that for once isn't totally different from the Japanese version). Yuma questions whom to duel but Tori reminds him of the 20 losses he's suffered already (sheesh all previous main characters have been way better than that).
Tori spots Bronk in the midst of a duel as his opponent named Shark uses his monsters as Xyz Material for Aero Shark (Submersible Carrier Aero Shark in the CG (1900) in Attack Mode (and they even explain how Xyz Monsters work both before and after it's Summoned). Yuma bets that his Deck wouldn't be called trash if he had an Xyz Monster (well not all of them are good so don't get your hopes up). Shark's direct attack wins Shark the duel and Shark claims Bronk's Deck as his prize (If it was really that bad, then why would you bother taking it?). Yuma isn't going to stand around and gets Shark's attention. They have a brief introduction and Yuma learns what the stakes were before challenging Shark to a duel.
Yuma needs a wager for Bronk's Deck and Shark forces Yuma to duel for the key but not before breaking it and kicking half of it off the upper floor. Shark still agrees to duel if Yuma can wager his own Deck for Bronks (and that could've been done before where you wouldn't have lost your key, which clearly is either quite fragile or Shark has rather strong shoes because I doubt that's a plastic key). Walking away, Shark says to meet him at the courtyard on Sunday should Yuma want to get Bronk's Deck back. That night, Yuma dreams of that door again and doesn't even know if he can unlock it anymore. The next day, Yuma isn't interested in trying to clear the blocks again or try the swimming lap.
Later, while Yuma and Tori are walking along, Bronk shows up advising not to duel as Shark made it to the National Finals the previous year but Yuma wants to show Shark that he can't push others around. Bronk isn't willing to stop Yuma and hands him the other half of the key he found before taking off. All Yuma knows is he was given the key for a reason and when he goes to take off the next morning, his grandma gives him food for his duel. Yuma arrives at the duel and duel preparations get underway before Yuma draws and summons Zubaba Knight (1600) in Attack Mode. Shark draws and plays Big Jaws (1800) in Attack Mode and gives the viewers a basic lesson on damage calculation before powering up his monster with Aqua Jet, giving it 1000 ATK to 2800.
His attack takes out ZK to leave Yuma down to 2800 LPs. (The real BJ is banished after attacking.) Finally, Shark sets 1 card to end his turn (and I like this sort-of Dueling Platform scene at 15:15 so viewers can follow along more easily). Yuma draws and plays Gagaga Magician (1500) in Attack Mode. After some ridicule from Shark, Yuma equips GM with Wonder Wand, giving it 500 ATK to 2000, enough to overpower BJ (though the real AJ is a permanent ATK boost). His attack forces Shark to activate Zeus' Breath (Poseidon Wave in the CG) to negate the attack and deal Yuma 800 damage per WATER monster on his field, leaving Yuma down to 2000 LPs. Two can play at that game and Yuma sets a Trap Card too but is reminded that it's bad to state which type of card you Set in your Spell and Trap Zone. Shark isn't worried and draws before playing Skull Kraken (600) in Attack Mode.
Due to SK's effect, Shark can destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card and Shark chooses WW, leaving GM down to its original ATK. Yuma is about to be stomped by Shark, much like his key was but Yuma gives a speech that repairs his key and brings him to the door but in reality. Yuma agrees to the terms and we see a new character appear briefly before Yuma is taken back out. The door possesses Shark and uses his monsters as Xyz Material for Number 17: Leviathan Dragon (2000) in Attack Mode. Neither Tori nor Bronk have seen this monster before and Bronk can't understand the idea of it being a Number monster. Shark uses Number 17's effect to remove Skull Kraken to give itself 500 ATK to 2500.
Shark takes out GM to leave Yuma on the ground and down to 1000 LPs. Yuma isn't scared but his new friend tells him to rise up. Just who is this mysterious character?
