Episode 83: The Dark Spirit Revealed (2)

On Kaiba Craft 3, Dark Bakura calls Yami foolish for helping release Dark Sanctuary but Yami protests that DB should be the one in fear with no monsters out and 150 LPs remaining. However, he discovers that his attack fails and he gets attacked himself instead as DB explains that because Gamma The Magnet Warrior was possessed, Yami takes half its ATK as damage, leaving him down to 3250 and DB gains that amount, putting his LPs up to 900. Next, DB plays Destiny Board, which'll spell out a message that'll end in Yami's defeat. (The card's artwork shows a "D" at 3:16 into the Japanese episode.) Oops! At 3:17 into the US episode, the artwork of Destiny Board has changed into Spirit Message - "A's" artwork! (I'll also note that the board's color got changed from a brownish to a blue for US and I've always considered these Ouija boards nonsense because of how easy it is to manipulate results.) The first letter, "F", appears.

For his turn, DB plays Dark Door (The Dark Door in the CG), preventing both players from attacking more than once per turn. Next, he summons Earthbound Spirit (500) in Attack Mode, then tributes it to maintain Dark Sanctuary and sets 1 card to end his turn. Yami draws, considers his options, then plays Kuriboh (200) in Defense Mode and attacks with Dark Magician Girl but since she was possessed, Yami takes half its ATK as damage, putting him down to 2000 and DB gains that, putting his score at 2150. Since Yami's turn is over, DB can play Spirit Message "I" but Yami protests that both players have only 5 Spell and Trap Card slots and each letter takes up one of those slots and Dark Door is still in play but DB states that his DS card lets him play more than 5 Spell or Trap Cards.

DB plays Sangan (1000) in Attack Mode, then tributes it to keep DS in play, triggering its effect, allowing DB to draw 1 card. (The real card lets you add any monster with 1500 or less ATK from your deck to your hand.) Yami draws and DB picks another monster to possess with DS's effect. Yami plays Big Shield Gardna (2600) in Defense Mode and decides to attack with Gamma but DB is ready with Dark Spirit of the Silent to stop Gamma's attack and make DMG attack instead, leaving Yami's score down to 750 LPs and DB's LPs up to 3400 by DS' effect. Duke considers Yami a goner and gets a scolding from Tristan so he changes his mind to be more supportive. Mokuba is freaked out but Kaiba says spirits don't exist but Yami sets 2 cards to end his turn.

With that, DB plays Spirit Message "N", then plays Souls of the Forgotten (900) in Attack Mode, only to tribute it and maintain DS. Yami is ready to take his turn by activating Collected Power, forcing certain Spell Cards to move to Kuriboh (more specifically Equip Spell Cards but in the real game, Kuriboh couldn't equip with Magic Formula because it's specific to Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl). Next, Yami uses Exile of the Wicked to destroy Kuriboh and the evil ghost. Marik decides a chat is in order but DB insists he doesn't need any help. Marik warns that he has to win the duel or no deal. Yami then activates Monster Reborn to bring back Dark Necrofear and negate DS' effect. His direct attack leaves DB down to 1200 LPs.  Nevertheless, DB activates Spirit Message "A" and now Yami realizes the message spells out "Final". It's too bad DB can't play the last card since all of his Spell and Trap Card slots are used up. He'd have to discard his Dark Door card first (which you can't do in the CG, you'd have to play a card that lets you destroy it). Marik points out that DB is trapped but once again DB says he'll win on his own and Kaiba feels DB still has something planned. DB's next draw leaves him delighted as it'll take away everything Yami has. The fate of the world rests on Yami's victory!
