Episode 79: Shadow of a Duel

With the nighttime skies above, it's time they find out where the Battle City Finals are being held and they find out that the rumors are true when Joey puts his locator cards in place, revealing a projection that aims to tell them where the finals are being held. Meanwhile at the hospital, Bakura tosses in his sleep, dreaming about a conversation between his dark half and Marik about the Battle City Finals. Once Dark Bakura sees Solomon pleading for his good side to awaken, he heads down and awakens, learning that Yami and Joey qualified for the Battle City Finals but doesn't get told where they're being held because Solomon was too excited to ask. Solomon says DB should lie down but DB says he has work to do and knocks out Solomon with his Millennium Ring's powers.

Later, DB sees a duelist, whom pleads for his stuff back but all he gets in return is his deck in pieces and a remark that it's a poor deck. While the man reassembles his cards, DB looks around, learning that time is running out and figures it'd be wise to have a practice duel. He asks the group he heard about the Finals' current status but when denied, he gets physical and is told about duels in the cemetery. At said cemetery, one duelist comes in, concluding not a duelist in sight and is spooked by a crow before three guys in masks approach, scaring him more than the crow, enough to drop his duel disk and run. We discover that it's Bones, Sid and Zygor, the ones ripped of by Bandit Keith in Duelist Kingdom. It isn't long before DB arrives, concluding the same as the previous duelist but isn't deterred by Bones, Sid or Zygors' antics and quickly gets the upper hand of Zygor. Bones admits he can duel fair and square, especially if it means a trip to the finals. Zygor recognizes DB but has no memory of even what he had for breakfast that morning.

Bones accepts DB's conditions, concluding that DB can't be much of a duelist with only one Locator Card. DB begins by playing Headless Knight (1450) in Attack Mode, complete with a brief legend that already gets Bones trembling in fear, before setting 1 card to end his turn.Bones summons Snake Hair the Sorceress (The name translates to just "Snake Hair" in the CG) (1500) in Attack Mode and takes out HK to leave DB down to 3950 LPs. DB uses his face down Shallow Grave (The Shallow Grave in the CG), letting him bring back a monster from his Grave in Defense Mode (the real card's effect applies to both players and the monsters are placed face down in Defense Mode and also can't be activated in this manner) and he chooses Headless Knight.

Zygor warns about it but Sid protests that Snake Hair has more ATK (did we forget it's in Defense Mode and has higher DEF?). For his turn, DB tributes HK for Earl of Demise (2000) in Attack Mode and attacks, destroying SH and leaving Bones' score down to 3500. (The real card's name is The Earl of Demise.) Bones responds by summoning Dragon Zombie (1600) in Attack Mode, then playing Magic Burial (Premature Burial in the CG), paying 800 LPs to bring back Snake Hair, bringing his score down to 2700. Next he uses Polymerization to bring out Great Mammoth of Goldfine (2200) in Attack Mode, then sets 1 card, confident that he'll win quickly with the two cards in combination. DB draws but Bones then activates Skull Invitation, dealing DB 300 damage each time one of his monsters are destroyed (where does that qualify as "severely damaging" and, as we'll see, its effect applies to both players but the real card's effect deals 300 damage when at least 1 card is sent to the Grave by either player).

DB decides to toss out all cards in his hand, dealing him 1200 damage by SI's effect to leave his score down to 2750 (This is an illegal move in the CG because you need a card effect that lets you do this.). However, DB activated Spiritualistic Medium, giving his monster 500 ATK per card destroyed this turn, giving EoD 2000 more ATK to 4000. His attack takes out GMoG to leave Bones down to 900, then 600 by SI's effect. DB mentions they've been dueling in the Shadow Realm and Sid is spooked into running away but only ends up back where he started.

Trembling Bones draws and uses Nightmare's Steelcage, preventing DB from attacking for 2 turns (its effect affects both players in the CG). As a bonus protection, Bones sets 1 Spell Card face down. DB draws, disappointed that the duel must end so soon and uses Ectoplasmer (in the Field Spell Card slot as shown from 16:56 to 16:57 into the episode) to tribute his monster, dealing Bones half its ATK to win the duel. While Bones and crew go to the Shadow Realm, DB is off to the Battle City Finals to later obtain the world's greatest power.
