Episode 62: The Master of Magicians (3)

Still at the duel, Arkana reminds Yami of the danger he's in but Yami protests that Arkana has lost by trusting Marik and is foolish to think Marik will release Catherine, his lost love if he defeats Yami. Nevertheless, Arkana remains convinced Catherine is behind the curtain and sets 1 monster to end his turn (or so he says from 1:44 to 1:47 into the US episode when as Yami points out, it's NOT a monster). He then continues boasting about being a Dark Magician master and Yami's reply to him isn't processed because of the Dark Energy Disk's loud hum (which isn't as loud as Arkana is making it seem so it's probably just to add insult to injury). Yami stops Arkana from having another turn by taking his own and playing Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts (1500) in Attack Mode.

However, that's what Arkana wanted and activates Shadow Balance to destroy Yami's monsters since Arkana has none. (A very similar card called "Pineapple Blast" must be activated when you Normal Summon a monster and your opponent has more monsters. It lets your opponent choose monsters they control to be destroyed to equal the number of monsters you have. On another note, oddly enough, despite both Big Shield Gardna and Gazelle being placed into the same "tray", they're shown being destroyed in separate "trays".)Arkana draws exactly what he needs and plays Dark Magic Curtain, paying half his LPs for Dark Magician (2500) in Attack Mode, bringing his score down to 750. Next, to ensure his victory, he uses Anti-Magic Arrows to stop Yami from activating his face down cards to save himself. (Possibly the closest thing to this effect is "Cold Wave", which prevents either player from activating or setting Spell or Trap Cards and must be the first card you play in Main Phase 1.)

His attack is stopped as Yami explains DMC's effect is available to both sides of the field (not so with the real card) and with that, Yami pays half his own LPs for a different Dark Magician but Arkana protests that Yami has only one and isn't set straight by Yami's reply so Yami unveils Dark Magician Girl (2000) in Attack Mode, bringing his score down to 350. (DMC is restricted to bringing out only Dark Magician in the CG.) Still not convinced, Arkana attacks but his monster is beaten. How can this be? Yami explains that DMG gains 300 ATK per Dark Magician in either players' Graveyard. Now it's time for Yami's grand finale as he attacks directly with DMG to win the duel. Just outside, Tristan is informed of Yugi's disappearance and discovery, agreeing fully to help. Yami discovers a key and locator card when his box opens, then while his friends arrive at the door to the arena, tries to get himself freed.

Arkana isn't worried until after he gets the key from his sleeve as Marik intercepts, warning of his impending punishment. Yami discovers his friends are literally behind him and makes a split-second decision to become Yugi and frees Arkana barely in time (with Arkana's key that Marik said didn't exist I might add), saying not even he deserves to go the Shadow Realm. Arkana darts to the curtain and discovers he was tricked but figures it's also possible the real Catherine is hidden away for later. He's left in tears as Yugi walks over but quickly is taken over by Marik, whom explains his role in Yami's power, then warns of "The Quiet One" and his possession of a God Card. Without another answer, Marik releases his grip on Arkana and the body slumps in Yugi's hands as his friends finally burst into the room. Back in his lair, Marik tells his servant, now revealed as Odion to keep an eye on Yugi's friends as they could be useful. Then he heads over and picks up his Winged Dragon of Ra card, remembering its part in the pharaoh's power (and I don't think his facial expression at the end matches his dialogue that well). The entire world will kneel at his feet and no one will be able to stop him!
