Episode 17: Arena of Lost Souls (1)

In what is clearly a dream, Joey gets chased by a Blue-Eyes White Dragon before Kaiba appears and literally becomes his dog. It takes a drop of water from a nearby leaf to return him to reality. (Surprising that no one awakens to any of his noise.) He wakes everyone up, saying he's eager to duel. Tea` arrives, handing Yugi a note (that is completely illegible so how Yugi can read it is beyond me). Perhaps they really can trust Mai. While they discuss the competition, three other characters are eying them. One, named Bonz, eyes Joey and they all spot Yugi, the one who beat Kaiba. A more dimwitted one named Zygor explains to Bandit Keith, their boss about the situation. They've never seen him duel before. How do they know he's really that good? It's payback time for the way Pegasus treated BK at the Intercontinental Championship!

Joey feels like they're being followed and darts ahead. Inside a cave, BK is taking Bonz to a hidden arena but Bonz is already getting the chills just from a skull. Outside, Joey wonders if Tea` was right but Zygor changes all that by apparently putting Joey to sleep or knocking him out because he awakens inside the cave in front of the dueling arena where Bonz is waiting. Back outside, The group split up to find Joey, whom admits to being afraid of Bonz's face and that gets Bonz's audience laughing. The stakes are set and the duel begins as Zygor says to put Joey away quickly with a Zombie card, getting Joey suspicious.

However, BK wants Bonz to play the far left card and after some arguing, Bonz plays Zanki (1500) in Attack Mode. Joey counters with Axe Raider (1700) in Attack Mode and takes it out to leave Bonz's score at 1800. More orders from BK and Bonz unhappily sets a monster, which is revealed as Crawling Dragon (1400) in Defense Mode and destroyed by Joey's Axe Raider. Bonz draws and plays Crass Clown (1350) in Attack Mode. Joey brings out Flame Swordsman (1800) in Attack Mode and takes out CC to leave Bonz down to 1350. Bonz draws a TRAP Card he had forgotten about (Not Spell Card as we see at 17:32 into the episode but it is a Spell Card in the Japanese but calling it a Trap Card for the dubbed episode keeps consistency).

He activates Call of the Haunted, bringing back his CC, CD and Zanki as Zombies with the power of immortality. (The real card brings back 1 monster from your Grave in Attack Position. without any of these new powers. It would also appear that they're using Dragon Zombie for Crawling Dragon, Clown Zombie for Crass Clown and Armored Zombie for Zanki.)Yugi and his friends discover Joey's wallet and a cave, which they enter and find coffins that give Tea` and Bakura a scare. Meanwhile, with Bonz's monsters as Zombies, they get the FPB, raising CC, CD and Zakis' ATKs to 1950, 2080 and 1755 respectively. Bonz attacks AR with Crawling Dragon, leaving Joey's score down to 1780 (though you never see the graphic showing this). Joey concludes that he blew it and he's done for in this duel.
