Episode 11: The Dueling Monkey

The gang search for Mokuba but to no avail, figuring he's at Pegasus' castle. Joey finds some cards on the ground and Tristan (with a much better voice IMO) says they're his. Joey has a card like one of them called Swamp Battleguard in his deck. Tea` snickers at the resemblance between Joey and Tristan and the Battleguard monsters. Meanwhile, Mai finishes off another opponent but showing no excitement at all. Ever since losing to Joey, it's no fun to her if she beats top duelists. Rex arrives, wanting a rematch but Mai isn't impressed (and she shouldn't, given what we saw in his match against Weevil) showing her eight star chips, won from duelists like Rex who think by dueling a chick they'll get easy star chips. She'd like to see Rex duel him and has an idea, agreeing to duel Rex if he defeats Joey. Joey agrees to the duel but his friends aren't as eager. Mai adds that Yugi cannot aid in the duel or Rex wins by default. Tristan can't bare to watch Joey throw his star chips away and gets a nasty shove (that got cut out I might add) before finally walking away.

The stakes are recited once more before Yugi heads off and the duel begins with Joey playing Baby Dragon (700) in Defense Mode. Rex is puzzled and Joey figures Rex knows he's toast (more like puzzled at what to make of this) but Rex quickly snaps out of it by playing Two-Headed King Rex (1600) in Attack Mode and destroying Baby Dragon. He reminds Joey that even three year olds know better than to defend on their first move. (What nonsense is this? What if your hand only has weak monsters? A true rookie would place weak monsters in Attack Mode and it's also a strategy to run high DEF monsters for something like Exodia.) Mai adds that Joey's one mistake that'll cost him the duel was agreeing to the conditions in the first place.

Joey plays Leogun (1750) in Attack Mode and attacks, not realizing THKR got an FPB that put its ATK up to 2080, enough to take out Leogun and leave Joey down to 1670 LPs.  He plays Axe Raider (1700) in Attack Mode with a FPB that puts its ATK at 2210 and takes out THKR to leave Rex with 1870 LPs. (An illegal move without a legit reason in the CG because he already Normal Summoned this turn and attacked.) Rex warns not to let it go to his head and plays Sword Arm of Dragon (1750 to 2275 by FPB) in Attack Mode, taking out AR to leave Joey's score at 1605. Joey plays Rock Ogre (Rock Ogre Grotto #1 in the CG) (1200) in Defense Mode. Rex brings out Megazowler (1800 to 2340 by the FPB) in Attack Mode, taking out ROG #1 in its attack.

Joey plays Flame Swordsman (1800 to 2340 by the FPB) in Attack Mode (and I note that it's a Normal Monster in Japanese at 14:24 into the episode despite not being played as one in the US version). Rex counterattacks but his monster is beaten, leaving him down to 1330. Both Rex and Joey are surprised and Mai can't see how Joey knew the vulnerability of Dinosaurs to FIRE monsters. Rex puts SAoD into Defense Mode and it along with other monsters (that appear to be Crawling Dragon #2 (1200) and Uraby (800) both in Defense Mode) get taken out. Joey brings out Swamp Battleguard (1800 to 2340 by the FPB) in Attack Mode.

Rex draws and plays Serpent Night Dragon (2350) in Attack Mode, a card awarded to winners of the regional championship (pathetic prize card if you ask me and we got it as a hard-to-pull SCR card in LOB, though it recently got a more fitting rarity). SND's attack on FS leaves Joey down to 1595 LPs. Joey draws. It's the card Tristan had and recalls another time with bullies where Tristan saved him, realizing that Tristan bails him out because he cares. Joey brings out Lava Battleguard (1550) in Attack Mode and Rex attempts to destroy SB with SND but it gets destroyed (and even the explanation given doesn't answer that question). Somewhere the Battleguards' ATKs went up enough to leave Rex down to just 840 LPs. Joey and Tristan should celebrate while they can because Rex is about to crash their party!
