Episode 3: Journey to the Duelist Kingdom

One evening outside their school, Yugi thinks about what's happened thus far with his grandpa and is determined to beat Pegasus at his own game, whatever that is. Elsewhere, Joey also gets a tape and finds her sister on screen, revealing her name as Serenity and telling briefly about their apparent separation 6 years ago before adding that she might be running out of time. The tape ends after she tells Joey to take care. Yugi returns to the game shop to find an envelope containing special Duel Monsters cards, including an invite to the Duelist Kingdom tournament. The next day, he, Tea` and Joey discuss the cards further and Yugi adds that he must go and Joey literally has his eyes on the 3 million dollar prize.

Later, Joey is thinking to himself when Yugi arrives and the two discuss their first meet (which I might add contains some of the only dubbed clips of the Season 0 episodes, none of which have ever aired in US due to the large amount of violence). That night, (presumably) one of Pegasus' men announce the start of the Duelist Kingdom tournament and instruct the participants to come board the ship. Another of his men adds that they must present their star chips upon entry. However, Joey is making a mess of things by trying to sneak on board. Yugi helps out by giving him one of his own, willing to be at a possible disadvantage. Tristan and Tea` also sneak on board by hiding behind crates.

A girl arrives and talks to Yugi, telling him to ditch Joey, whom is already falling for her. She doesn't stay long and leaves shortly after, saying her name is Mai. Inside, Joey is causing more trouble, demanding a better room. Does he want to get thrown out of here? Two more duelists, identified by Yugi and Joey respectively as Weevil and Rex, explain that the better suites go to finalists of the last championship. Rex says he went easy on Weevil (based on what I saw, you didn't exactly have a choice).

Weevil and Yugi are both looking forward to facing each other and Weevil fills Yugi and Joey in on not only the new rules but people trading. Elsewhere, Mai isn't happy with her room either and unlike with Joey are being more apologetic. Rex warns her about being thrown out and agrees to show her his room. Outside, Tea` can't sit still from the cold and Tristan makes her feel worse by adding that sunrise is in a few hours. The nearby door opens and they both identify another duelist named Bakura from their school, having no idea why he's here. Back inside, Rex and Mai set stakes for their duel. Outside again, Joey shows his trades (which even back when this episode aired would be considered bad but certainly now they'd be bad).

What FIRE monster(s) does he have to give Salamandra to?). Yugi gives him his Time Wizard card, saying it could be helpful in a tight spot (or a disaster, which is why I don't run that card because I either need just him out so I don't lose much in LPs or attacking power but can't deal much battle damage or risk having many monsters in order to have a shot at winning). Weevil runs into Yugi again while Rex and Mai begin their duel (which is really more of a "look what I can do" show) and Rex realizes how much trouble he's in. Elsewhere, Yugi agrees to show Weevil Exodia and hands the set to him. (Why not just show him the cards without giving them to him? After all, you've only barely met him.) For a while, Weevil had been coming up with a strategy to beat them but couldn't come up with anything until that very moment and tosses the set over the railing.

Joey agrees to get them despite Yugi's words that they aren't worth drowning over and ends up being saved by Yugi and the two of them by Tristan and Tea`. Rex also loses his suite to Mai. Back onboard, Joey explains his situation before the sun rises. They'll do their best; Joey for his sister and Yugi for his grandpa.
