Episode 8: The Sparrow (2)
At the duel, Yuma knows Nelson is convinced that he's really The Sparrow and calls Tori to report the news and after explaining things, he orders Tori to get Bronk and bring Nelson's mom. Tori agrees and Yuma draws before playing Gagaga Magician (1500) in Attack Mode. Next he Special Summons Kagetokage (1100) in Attack Mode since he Normal Summoned a Level 4 monster. Then, he uses his monsters as Xyz Material for Number 39: Utopia (2500) in Attack Mode. Knowing full well that he must take out a monster this turn, Yuma notes that Astral is caring for someone else and learns that Astral knows what it's like to be lonely. They agree to continue the duel so Yuma attacks with Utopia but Nelson activates Wings of Unity to negate the attack and Special Summon Phoenix Beast Gairuda (2500) in Attack Mode since he controls Esper Star Sparrow.
The spirits have a conversation that has Astral admiring them but due to PHG's effect, Nelson gets to draw 1 card. (Not so with the real card.) With little to do, Astral says to set the card on the right and Yuma does to end his turn. Nelson draws and Special Summons Ironhammer the Giant (3500) in Defense Mode since he controls Beast-Warrior Puma, Phoenix Beast Gairuda and Esper Star Sparrow. Just then, Tori and Bronk appear with Nelson's mom but Nelson only accepts his identity as The Sparrow and his mom as Number 83: Galaxy Queen. Mrs. Andrews isn't happy and learns that Nelson has been attacking people at night. Yuma convinces Mrs. Andrews to watch the duel and Nelson resumes by detaching one of Galaxy Queen's Xyz Materials to give his monsters piercing battle damage and prevent their destruction in battle.
His first attack with Gairuda activates its other effect, to give it 300 ATK to 2800 and prompting Yuma to detach an Xyz Material from Utopia to negate the attack.
Next, Nelson attacks with ESS but again Yuma detaches an Xyz Material from Utopia to negate the attack. However, Nelson uses Ironhammer's effect to let Beast-Warrior Puma attack directly, bringing Yuma down to 800 LPs. (What they don't tell you is that Ironhammer can only select Level 4 or lower monsters in the anime, hence why he didn't use it on a stronger monster. The real card can select any of your monsters to attack directly.) Astral is fading away so he urges Yuma to activate Heartfelt Appeal to gain control of Ironhammer until the end of their next turn since it has the highest DEF and since they took damage from a direct attack. Finally, Nelson sets 1 card to end his turn.
Yuma draws but with few options, he plays Attraffic Control to prevent Nelson from attacking while he controls 3 monsters. It's the last piece of the puzzle needed to win in Astral's eyes as Astral saw the episode they're taking part in and gets Yuma to set 2 cards and end his turn. Nelson draws and ignores his mom's pleas before activating Change to Jet Iron to tribute all but Galaxy Queen for Dimensional Jet Iron (D.D. Jet Iron in the CG) (0000) in Attack Mode. (The real card is a bit easier to Summon as it doesn't need the Trap Card or the required monsters to be face-up on your field.)
Due to DJI's effect, its ATK becomes the total ATK of the Tributed monsters (but they don't tell you that and the real card's original ATK is 4000), raising its ATK to 8000. Yuma is getting hungry and eats what his grandma gave him earlier before activating Fiery Fervor to double Utopia's ATK to 5000.It's not enough and AC no longer stops Nelson's attacks but Yuma also activates Reserve Cyclone to destroy Furious Max's Curse since one of their monsters shifted control to Nelson. Nelson's attack forces Yuma to activate Vector Change to switch Jet Iron to Defense Mode and Galaxy Queen to Attack Mode. Nelson isn't willing to give up just yet and sets 1 card to end his turn. Yuma draws, knowing it's their last shot to save Nelson and attacks but Nelson activates Star Sparrow Forever to revive Esper Star Sparrow (0000) with no ATK points. As a result, it and Nelson are beaten and Nelson's mask comes off.
Why did Nelson activate the Trap Card if it didn't affect the duel's outcome? Nelson wanted to protect his mom and Astral takes Number 83 and frees Nelson from its grip before Mrs. Andrews goes to his aid. When Nelson comes to, Mrs. Andrews apologizes and vows to let Nelson be himself, reminding Yuma of his bond with his mom. Later that night, Yuma suggests dinner and explains that he didn't tell Tori about The Sparrow to not hurt her feelings. Their happy moment is short-lived as Yuma brings up times where Tori was sad while Shark passes by. Back at home, Yuma is moved by the ending of the latest episode of The Sparrow before Astral makes his latest observation about humans. Astral got the memory of when he was born and we get to see it unfold.
