Episode 187: Let the Games Begin! (1)

At the Kaiba Dome, planes fly overhead to unveil the tournament's title and the Kaiba Dome opens as Roland announces the start of the tournament and Tristan has to try being himself instead of how Tea` wants him to be. Mokuba takes the spotlight and adds Yugi but Yugi isn't willing to join in at all so Mokuba announces that Joey is facing the mystery duelist (whom is clearly not well disguised as we know him as Solomon Muto but I'll play along anyway) Apnarg Otum. All Joey knows is the mask is coming off when he wins. Tristan and Tea` ponder why Apnarg seems so familiar but Yugi knows all too well. After the second first round match up is decided, Mokuba tries again to bring Yugi to the front and isn't feeling better from Yami's words.

Yugi slowly makes his way to the podium and gives a weary hello to the crowd before Kaiba's Blue-Eyes White Jet hovers and Kaiba drops down via jetpack, making a short speech. Roland adds that the duels have a specific location in Kaiba Land except the grand final, which will be done in the Kaiba Dome itself. We find Leon meeting Richard Goat (whom sounds like Bakura's VA), whom shares a few doctor references before they get ready. Meanwhile, Apnarg is already at the duel site while Joey has taken up a two-for-one sale on hot dogs. He's convinced by Mokuba to get going and the gang all pile into a boat and head over, running into a few traps along the way. They arrive with seconds to spare but Mokuba points out the secret passageway that he tried to tell Joey about.

Professor Hawkins sheds some light as the phone call he left for earlier was about Solomon joining the tournament. Decks are shuffled as Mokuba reveals that he let Solomon join after begging and learning that he's Yugi's teacher. Joey begins the duel with Swordsman of Landstar (500) in Attack Mode and setting 2 cards. Apnarg also sets 2 cards and summons Wandering Mummy (1500) in Attack Mode. Joey draws and summons Little-Winguard (although he doesn't say that's the monster's name, nor do we see whether it's actually an Effect Monster) (1400) in Attack Mode. He goes to attack, activating his Graceful Dice card but Apnarg activates Legendary Gambler (whose artwork shown at 14:16 into the episode resembles Apnarg himself when he was younger), letting Apnarg roll a die and if his number is higher than Joey's, Joey's card is negated.

Joey's card gets a 4 while Apnarg gets a 6 but Joey activates Skull Dice in hopes to lower WM's ATK but while his roll gets 5, Apnarg's gets 6 again so Apnarg destroys SoL and leaves Joey down to 3000 LPs (and we still see SoL on Joey's Duel Disk at 15:13 into the episode). Joey puts Little-Winguard to Defense Mode (by its effect, though doesn't state that) and ends his turn. Apnarg draws and activates Non Aggression Area, discarding 1 card to prevent Joey from Summoning next turn. Furthermore, he activates Mirage of Nightmare to draw cards until his hand holds 4 cards (during Joey's next Standby Phase) and sets 1 card to end his turn. Joey draws and so does Apnarg by his card's effect and Apnarg also activates Emergency Provisions to send MoN to the Grave and gain 1000 Life Points (and it's this exact combo that I believe has left Mirage banned in tournaments), raising his score to 5000. Joey is about to Tribute Summon Jinzo when Apnarg reminds him of NAA's effect (which also prevents setting and is strange as to why it doesn't see play now). Apnarg draws and activates Ancient City, then tributes WM for Ancient Giant (2200) in Attack Mode, whose effect forces Apnarg to attack with it or take 300 damage. Next he activates Ancient Key to bring out 2 Stone Giants (400 x2) in Attack Mode, which'll deal him 500 damage each if they don't attack. Apnarg attacks, destroying Joey's LW and leaving Joey down to 2200 LPs. With no monsters to protect him, Joey won't make it past the next turn!
