Episode 86: Duelist for Hire
Yusei finds himself in a deserted area, assuming this is where Barb, the person that wrote the letter to him for help, said to go. His train of thought is broken as a commotion down below between a few thugs and three others breaks out. One of them throws a necklace of sorts up to where Yusei is watching from before the three of them are knocked out. Yusei tries to find out more but doesn't get much out of it and will need to go into town if he's to get anymore info. As he heads into town, he recalls what the letter said but has more questions than answers. However, two thugs appear and order him to duel with them in spite of Yusei's decline. A woman appears to stop the duel as it's not time yet and guests are to be welcomed with flowers, revealing herself as Barb, the one that wrote to Yusei.
That evening, as Yusei clarifies a few things, Barb shares the procedures that take place, including duels between rival gangs. The challenger for the duel steps out and is thrown a few insults and is revealed as Giant before getting to meet his opponent, one that is all too familiar to Yusei. It's Kalin and Yusei will need to save him because once the sun sets, the loser vanishes. People gather before Kalin ends up getting his hand faster and draws before playing Infernity Mirage (0000) in Attack Mode. Next he sets 1 card to end his turn. Yusei asks what Kalin would be doing here and all Barb knows is that Kalin is here to punish himself from an event in the past and explains what the mountain behind them is for. Giant draws and plays Illegal Keeper (1300) in Attack Mode. Next, he uses Card of Destruction (rather Card Destruction) to force both players to discard all cards in their hands and redraw the same amount from their Decks but Kalin is ready with Full Salvo (whose art in the US is still uncensored at around 11:01 into the US episode) to discard all cards in his hand and deal Giant 200 damage per card, leaving Giant down to 3200.
Kalin activates IM's effect to Tribute itself and Special Summon Infernity Archfiend (1800) and Infernity Destroyer (2300) in Attack Mode. (The real IM's effect can only be used during your turn.) Not wanting to attack, Giant ends his turn so Kalin draws and activates Infernity Burst to deal Giant 800 damage for each of his Infernity monsters in play, dealing Giant 1600 damage to leave his score down to 1600. Next he attacks and destroys IK with ID, leaving Giant down to 300, then 0 by ID's effect.  As a result, Giant is carted off to the mines where he'll work for the rest of his life. This is why those men were running earlier but neither Yusei nor Barb understand why Kalin doesn't just lose (probably to not disappoint his group and/or show his skills).
The groups go their separate ways and Yusei tries to talk to Kalin and Kalin realizes who he's talking to but doesn't stay. Barb has a better idea and Yusei takes up on it, putting some kind of robe over much of his body and entering Malcom's territory to duel for work. With duel preparations complete, Yusei draws and plays Changer Synchron (0000) in Defense Mode before setting 1 card to end his turn. The thugs each play Fuse Ray Blaster (1600 x3) in Attack Mode, causing Yusei to take 800 damage from two of them by their effects, leaving him down to 1600 LPs. In spite of what the thugs have in their hands, Yusei is confident he'll win, recalling what else Barb said for their plan. He draws and discards Quillbolt Hedgehog to Special Summon Quickdraw (rather Quickdraw Synchron) (700) in Attack Mode. Next, he uses Quillbolt Hedgehog's effect to Special Summon itself (800) in Attack Mode, then uses it and QS as Synchro Material for Nitro Warrior (2800) in Attack Mode (by treating QS as Nitro Synchron but they don't tell you that). Then he plays Gauntlet Warrior (400) in Attack Mode and uses it and CS as Synchro Material for Armory Arm (1800) in Attack Mode.
Since CS was Synchro Material, Yusei uses its effect to put one of the FRB's Defense Mode. After that, he uses AA's first effect to equip itself to NW, raising its ATK by 1000 to 3800, then equips NW with Junk Barrage, triggering NW's first effect to give it 1000 more ATK to 4800 for its first attack. His first attack takes out the first FRB to defeat Thug 1 by NW, JB and AA's combined effects. His second attack via NW's 2nd effect takes out a second and defeats Thug 2 by JB and AA's effects. He defeats Thug 3 using Synchro Overlimit to let NW attack again since it defeated a monster in battle. Impressed with Yusei's skills, Malcom asks if Yusei is willing to do the same with Kalin and Yusei agrees as he's Malcom's man.
