Episode 5: The Shadow Duelist (1)

Alexis is at the Abandoned Dorm and places a rose in front hoping that her brother Atticus is at peace, wherever he is. Meanwhile, at Jaden's dorm, he and the gang are telling stories. Jaden tells Syrus that water's not so scary. Syrus agrees. Only a chump would be scared of water and Chumley apparently was afraid. Still, it was a mid-level story for a mid-level card. Jaden draws, hopping to get a high level but instead gets a level 1. He tells his story and we get to see some of the cards they've been doing before. The cards shown at 2:43 into the episode are completely altered for US.

Jaden says that back when he was a little kid he used to hear strange noises. When he got into the room, there was nothing but his cards. Yet he's been starting to hear the strange noises and the screen goes to a shot of Winged Kuriboh. Oops! Winged Kuriboh's card image has been flipped for this shot at 3:22 into the episode in the US! The attribute should be on the right yet it's on the left and the kanji for LIGHT is flipped as well although it's hard to see. The Japanese have it right. Just then, Professor Banner comes in, telling them he wants to join in on the "scare fest". Syrus tells him he already has. Jaden asks Banner to draw a card and Banner agrees and draws a card, a Level 12 Monster. Syrus says he'll go to bed now.

Banner asks him if they want to hear about the Abandoned Dorm on the edge of the island. Banner tells them it was shut down after several students mysteriously disappeared. Syrus asks where they went and Banner replies that's the mystery. He then tells them that they used to play Shadow Games. "With Millennium Items right?" Jaden asks. He's heard about those but it's not true. Banner disagrees, saying that that's what most people say. Pharaoh, his cat, meows and Banner says that's his cue to get home and leaves. Syrus says there is a creepy building at the edge of the forest he saw. Great! Jaden says. Syrus will lead them to the dorm tomorrow night.

Outside the dorm, Crowler says it's just the opportunity he's been waiting for! He thinks it's time the Shadow Games made a comeback, Millennium Items and all! Meanwhile, in an alley, A mysterious man is dueling and has just defeated another duelist. The other duelists pleads to let him go, he'll give the shadow duelist anything he wants. The shadow duelist replies that what he wants...is the other duelist's soul and activates his item, which looks like the Millennium Puzzle. The other duelist pleads for the shadow duelist for mercy but the shadow duelist doesn't know what mercy is and takes his soul. He then walks away, telling him to rest in peace in the Shadow Realm. Just then, Shadow Duelist gets a call on his "pager" from someone ordering him to be at Duel Academy tomorrow night. Shadow duelist says he'll be there. Clouds hide the moon.

The next day, everyone is in class and Banner talks about the philosophy of dueling. Outside the classroom, Crowler says that Jaden will get a make up lesson in the Shadow Games! Outside Duel Academy once more, Shadow Duelist shows up and Crowler realizes he's who they call the Shadow Duelist. Shadow Duelist replies that his opponents call him many things, most of which are hard to discern through their shrieks of terror. He asks Crowler what his job is.

Crowler tells him that he wants Shadow Duelist to frighten someone so bad that he leaves Duel Academy and never comes back. He asks Shadow Duelist if he's up for the challenge. "Of course," Shadow Duelist says. He never backs down from a challenge!  Crowler tries to turn to Shadow Duelist's back but Shadow Duelist turns to face him just as quickly. "Oh, you are good," Crowler says. Shadow Duelist tells him he's better than good and he'll prove it, not only by scaring this "someone" but by banishing him to the Shadow Realm and disappears.

In the forests, Jaden and the gang are walking towards the Abandoned Dorm and Jaden says they could put it as being lost or maybe they've been finding places where it's not. Chumley tells him that they've been "looking for places" for over an hour but it could be worse for Syrus. They could be near a lake of "dirty swamp water". Chumley laughs but Syrus is not amused. They argue and Jaden tells them to check it out, shining his flashlight on the rose. Chumley says to check that out, pointing to the Abandoned Dorm, saying there are probably lots of ghosts too. Jaden tells them to relax, there's no one here. They hear a noise. So what's that? It's Alexis. Jaden asks why Alexis is here.

That's funny, Alexis was about to ask Jaden the same thing. Jaden tells her that they heard about the Abandoned Dorm and wanted to check it out. Alexis says that it's not very intelligent of him. Doesn't he know that kids have a way of disappearing around there? Jaden says it's just some urban myth but Alexis says it isn't. Why else would they make that place completely forbidden? If they catch him here, they'll get expelled. Jaden asks Alexis. "So why are you here?" She yells at him saying that she has her reasons. She walks away saying that one of the kids that disappeared there was her brother. Syrus says they should leave but Jaden says they should go in and walks with Chumley jokingly telling Syrus not to disappear on them. Syrus frantically looks around and decides to go with them. Elsewhere, Alexis hopes Jaden knows what he's doing and turns around to see a shadow, Shadow Duelist's shadow and she screams.

Inside the dorm, Jaden says the place is sweet. All it needs is a little paint, a few cardboard boxes, maybe a throw rug and they could so totally move in there! Syrus asks if he's kidding and tells Jaden to not stand so close. Jaden realizes they're the Millennium Items and the picture next to it shows someone he's never seen before. Meanwhile, Alexis awakens to being tied up as Shadow Duelist tells her that she's on a hook, dangling for Jaden to fall into his trap. A Millennium Eye-like symbol appears and Alexis screams once more.

This time, the gang hears it and races off. They get to a staircase, race down it and find a card Alexis owns. Chumley says there's only one way she could've gone, pointing to a dark corridor. Jaden says that's where they're going and after traveling through several corridors, they find the room with Alexis in it. Shadow Duelist tells them that Alexis can't hear them, she's locked far away, locked in the Shadow Realm. Jaden asks who's there and out of the smoke rises Shadow Duelist, his worst nightmare come true! Jaden's not buying it. Shadow Duelist tells Jaden to let him prove it in a Shadow Game! They've gotta get Alexis back.

Jaden agrees and orders Shadow Duelist to hand her over or he'll be sorry. Shadow Duelist replies that the only way he'll free her is if Jaden defeats him in a Shadow Game. Jaden's not afraid of dueling him but Shadow Games don't exist! Shadow Duelist tells him that the others didn't believe in it either but they were soon convinced for when you lose in a Shadow Game you don't just pay with your LPs, you pay with your soul. Jaden realizes that he's the one behind all the disappearances.

Shadow Duelist tells him that unless Jaden beats him , Alexis is his forever. Chumley fishes a duel disk out of a backpack and hands it to Jaden. Jaden tells Shadow Duelist to get his game on! "Shadow Game that is", Shadow Duelist adds. Shadow Duelist draws and plays Infernalqueen Archfiend (900) in Attack Mode. An archfiend Monster? Jaden asks. Yes and each and every Monster with Archfiend in its name gains 1000 ATK points. (The real card only lets 1 Archfiend Monster get the ATK boost.) Infernalqueen's ATK rises to 1900.

Jaden tells him that he already knew that and he also knew that to keep the Archfiend Monsters in play he has to pay Life Points during every Standby Phase of his turn. (The real cards stay on the field but you still pay Life Points.) Shadow Duelist tells him that he doesn't, not after activating the Spell Card Pandemonium and puts the card in his duel disk. Jaden tells him it's cool and Shadow Duelist tells him it doesn't just change the scenery, it changes the rules. Now he doesn't have to pay Life Points and if one is destroyed outside of a battle he can put another one into his hand.

(The real card makes it so that neither player has to pay for Archfiend Monsters and if an Archfiend Monster is destroyed outside of battle, only a Monster with a lower level than the destroyed Monster can be added to the hand.) Shadow Duelist tells Jaden he knows what he's thinking, Alexis' fate is all but sealed and he's right as her coffin is closed and she is pulled downward. Chumley protests that it's not fair. What has he done? The same think that he'll do to the both of them should they continue to pester and annoy him. Jaden tells Shadow Duelist to leave his friends out of it and draws. He looks at his hand. One of them gets changed to Polymerization for US.

He doesn't have anything to go up against 1900 ATK points. He summons Elemental Hero Avian (1000) in Attack Mode and he throws down two face downs, ending his turn. Shadow Duelist tells him it's too bad he won't get a chance to use them and summons Terrorking Archfiend (2000) in Attack Mode. Thanks to the special ability of the Infernalqueen, Terrorking's ATK rises to 3000 making it an even more fiendish force to be reckoned with. He attacks Avian with Terrorking. Jaden says Shadow Duelist forgot about his face down card Mirror Gate! It allows their Monsters to trade places, Jaden's Avian for Shadow Duelist's Terrorking! (The real card returns the Monsters to their original positions at the End Phase.) SD smiles.

Jaden really thought that he could bait him into a trap and SD tells him to look around and see who's trapped. Jaden's Trap won't work on his Terrorking! Terrorking's effect give him a gambling chance. A number between 1 and 6 is selected at random and if it happens to be a 2 or a 6, Jaden's Trap is destroyed and Terrorking stays to fight on SD's side. SD spins the wheel of fate and a flame stops at each number while Chumley says that the odds are way in Jaden's favor but Syrus says Chumley flunked math. Chumley says he didn't, he got a 54 (which is still an "F" in high school and middle school.) The flame stops on a 2 and Avian is destroyed, reducing Jaden's LPs to 2000."That stinks," Jaden says. At least it activates his other Trap, Hero Signal! He summons Elemental Hero Clayman (2000) in Defense Mode. Syrus congratulates Jaden and Chumley says Clayman should keep Jaden safe. SD disagrees, it won't, not from this:

He holds up his "millennium item" Now the Shadow Games have truly begun! Doesn't Jaden's LPs seem insignificant with his life on the line? SD asks. Jaden sees that part of his arm's missing and he can't move his legs. SD says it's the nature of the Shadow Game. His friends will feel it as the fog passes them and they do. SD then says that they should treasure the numbness for it won't last. Soon they will be pulled in an infinite chasm where every waking moment will be filled with a gaping... "Give me a break," Jaden interrupts. How bad could it be? Back at his dorm they've had blackouts so they could stay up late. SD tells him that it doesn't produce the same power as his Millennium Item does.

Wow, Millennium Items, shadow fog, who could ask for a better challenge? Jaden thinks to himself. SD wonders why Jaden's smiling. Jaden tells himself to get his game on and draws. He activates Pot of Greed and fuses Clayman with Sparkman using Poly (although he doesn't say he's using Polymerization but the card appears.) for Elemental Hero Thunder Giant (2400) in Attack Mode.  He uses Thunder Giant's effect to destroy Terrorking (although he doesn't say so) but SD laughs, saying he activates Terrorking's special ability once again. It lands on 5 and SD says that he guesses fate isn't on Jaden's side half the time! Thunder Giant is destroyed. Chumley says it's totally anti-licious and the fog isn't helping either. First Jaden may not be able to save Alexis but now he might not even be able to save himself! SD tells Jaden that his Monsters are destroyed and he's next!
