Episode 78: Friends 'Til the End (4)

Marik/Joey gloats more about having the winning card (then play it already, jeez) before Kaiba gets an idea and contacts his HQ. Yugi continues trying to get to Joey and Joey is now remembering his past, which Marik tries to tell him he doesn't have Joey remains firm. Yugi continues his encouragement, then turns to Marik, telling him he's a coward and the true loser of the duel (and oddly enough they're face to face at this point but it may be just for easier understanding and therefore they aren't really face to face). With now just under a minute left on the clock, Yugi taunts Marik to come and get him and in a last ditch effort, Marik regains control of Joey and activates Meteor of Destruction to deal 1000 damage to Yugi if successful.

(The Japanese episode has it deal 1500 damage at a cost of 500 Life Points, which'd put Joey down to 600 LPs and the real card can't be activated if the opponent has less than 3000 Life Points, which is true in this case.) However, Joey breaks free for good and Yugi is prepared with his Mystical Refpanel card, letting him redirect the meteor wherever he wants (the real card would simply make the opponent take the damage). Joey asks why he has Yugi's Millennium Puzzle but even the answer he's given doesn't clear things up. 30 seconds remain and just when Kaiba thinks it's too late, his chopper arrives and Kaiba himself defeats the Rare Hunter before his chopper knocks over the crane (and at 11:29 to 11:30 into the US episode, there's no explosives but there's still an explosion).

With the risk of injuring Tea` gone, Mokuba frees Tea` and they race to help Yugi and Joey. Yugi decides to have MoD hit him anyway, winning Joey the duel. The timer expires, then starts counting down the last 30 seconds and during that time, Joey remembers MoD's 2nd effect, and forces Yugi's REBD to attack him, making the duel a draw (and confirming that this is the true effect because otherwise, Joey would've won with 200 LPs but this effect isn't present on the real card either). By this time, Yugi is out of it and Serenity has now removed her bandages. Joey makes a feeble attempt to get to Yugi's cuff to unlock it from the anchor but is too late and they both are pulled into the water. In the ocean depths, Joey frees Yugi and he rises to the surface (though he'd actually continue sinking down because he's heavier and not really moving on his own).

Tristan rescues him and orders Mokuba to get Joey's key but Serenity beats him to it and dives in to rescue Joey. The duo surface and Joey's apology is instantly accepted since it isn't his fault. How can he show his face in the finals now? Mai protests that he showed real courage (and did slap him but the scene was cut yet Joey still has his hand where he was slapped, leaving US viewers to wonder why his hand is there). When it's not enough to change Joey's mind, Tristan orders him to stop feeling sorry and Joey now realizes that Serenity can finally see. Serenity explains how she got her courage and the two comfort each other. Later that night, Joey gives Yugi back his Millennium Puzzle and Yugi thanks Kaiba for what he did and he'll see them at the finals, which they all forgot during this mess. It could be where Marik strikes next but Yugi will be ready for him!
