Episode 61: The Master of Magicians (2)

At the duel, Yami's suggestion to cut short the duel is denied so Yami tells Arkana to be prepared to lose the duel. Meanwhile, Tea` and Solomon can't figure out where Yami went but agree to search all over until they find him. Arkana knows that he must protect his LPs and plays Mystic Tomato (1100) in Defense Mode (and the hologram still comes up with the monster's Japanese design despite its artwork change to match the TCG), then sets 1 card to end his turn. Yami considers MT a weak defense and figures he can attack directly by taking it out in battle (then you must be oblivious to it being an Effect Monster as Arkana clearly showed you). Nevertheless, he plays Beta The Magnet Warrior (1700) in Attack Mode just as Arkana wanted as Arkana activates Dark Renewal, which sends 1 monster from each side of the field to the Grave to let the controller bring back 1 monster from their Graveyard and Yami realizes Arkana chooses his Dark Magician (2500) in Attack Mode, just as Yami has.

Yami sets 2 cards face down and so does Arkana, whom decides to match Yami's moves. Arkana then activates his face down Mystical Guillotine, taking Yami's Dark Magician and preparing it to be destroyed. (The card technically exists in the CG as a Trap Card called "Tragedy" but only its Japanese artwork has a guillotine. It destroys all Defense Position monsters your opponent controls when they change an Attack Position monster they have into Defense Mode.) However, Yami is prepared with Magical Hats and the guillotine only slices an empty hat. Still, Arkana counters with A Thousand Knives (Just "Thousand Knives" in the CG) but once again Yami is ready with Cursebreaker (De-Spell in the CG), cancelling out all other Spell Cards and destroying them. (The real card targets and destroys 1 Spell Card but if the target is face down and isn't a Spell Card, it goes back face down after being revealed without being activated.)

Arkana gets peeved and both decide to foolishly attack each others' Dark Magician, destroying them but bringing them back via each others' Monster Reborn. Yami has had enough and asks why he was led down here to duel and learns of Arkana's past (and we're left wondering what Yami is seeing about Arkana's face that has him gasping). Arkana doesn't believe in the Heart of the Cards (nor should he because it NEVER works in real life but to Yami's credit, Arkana shouldn't simply believe that Catherine really is waiting behind the curtain until the duel is over). Elsewhere, while Tea` and Solomon run around searching, Kaiba and Mokuba return to Kaiba Corp for their part in the search before Mokuba heads outside to search for himself.

Once again Arkana declines Yami's request to stop the duel and sets 1 card face down. Yami sets 2 cards face down himself so Arkana activates Beckon to the Dark to destroy Yami's DM but Yami activates Mystical Refpanel to make Arkana's Dark Magician the target of BttD's effect. (The real card can only be activated against a card targeting a player like letting them draw 1 card.) However, BttD was a decoy and Arkana now activates Nightmare's Chains, removing Yami's Dark Magician from play and leaving him open to direct attacks. Next, he attacks Yami directly with his DM, leaving Yami's score down to 1500 and now the Dark Energy Disk will send Yami's mind to the Shadow Realm (well not yet because Yami still has Life Points). It's time for Yami to make his final move and he does by playing Big Shield Gardna (2600) in Defense Mode. (The real card is an Effect Monster that can negate any Spell Card targeting it while face down and changes to Attack Mode after being attacked in Defense Mode.)

Arkana summons Doll of Demise (1600) in Attack Mode. (The real card is an Effect Monster that can be Special Summoned back from the Graveyard if sent there by a Continuous Spell Card effect). Oops! At 17:04 into the US episode, DoD is a Level 5 monster! Next, he activates Ectoplasmer, letting him fire his monsters' soul at Yami directly despite Yami's warning about having useless monsters. (The real card forces both players to Tribute a face up monster they have during their End Phase and deal their opponent damage equal to half their own Tributed monster's ATK.) The effect resolves with DoD's soul being fired successfully at Yami, leaving him down to 700 LPs. Arkana ignores Yami's 2nd plead to stop what he's doing and attempts to fire the soul of his own DM but to both their surprise, Yami's DM's soul is also extracted and defends Yami's LPs. Arkana is so into disrespecting his cards that he failed to learn how to use them properly. However, Yami may have avoided losing right there but he's still one attack away from being banished to the Shadow Realm forever!
