Episode 6: First Duel

Inside his castle, Pegasus now knows the tournament has started, along with the elimination of duelists. Meanwhile, Joey is itching for a duel and stands at the edge of the cliff, claiming to be the next champion and he'd better be one for his sister's sake and remembers a time during their younger years, vowing to win the tournament, the prize money and take her back to that beach one last time. A cheering crowd draws their attention to dueling arenas but it's short lived as Mai's last words to a duelist she just beat jog Tea`'s memory of how annoying she is. The duelist she beat claims foul play but she just says she's psychic and he's done, leaving him to run away in tears. Seeing the group, Mai decides to somewhat play nice and sarcastic, challenging Joey to a duel after overhearing them on the boat over there. Yugi decides to allow Joey to choose for himself whether or not he wants to duel Mai and he does.

Joey freaks out about the field but is reminded that his monsters still get FPB on the meadow part, then asks Mai why she duels. Mai's selfish answer doesn't surprise Joey as he says some duel for the people they care about. Without another word, the duel begins with Joey playing Masaki the Legendary Swordsman (1100) in Attack Mode, getting an FPB up to 1430. Mai's act puzzles everyone around her. She must pick the card that is best and that turns out to be Harpie's Lady (Harpie Lady in the CG) (1300) in Attack Mode, getting an FPB up to 1690. Joey attacks but because of a terrain rule, his monster's FPB is null, leaving it to get destroyed and dropping his score down to 1410.

Mai sets 1 card to end her turn, happy that her trick is working. He tries with Tiger Axe (1300) in Attack Mode with a FPB to 1690 but it's an EARTH monster so its FPB is null and it gets destroyed by HL, leaving Joey with 1020 LPs. Setting another card, she ends her turn. Joey sets a monster and Mai activates her hidden card Cyber Shield to give her HL 500 more ATK to 2190. She takes out his face down monster (which I cannot identify). Joey figures she must have ESP and Mai's following words only make him feel worse. Yugi becomes Yu-Gi-Oh and tells Joey to focus and Mai's strategy has been used for centuries.

Concentrating hard, Joey picks up different perfume scents and concludes they're coming from Mai's cards. Mai isn't psychic at all, she's a big fake! Mai is shocked that an amateur like Joey figured out her strategy, then protests that he won't necessarily win. However, Joey won't fall for Mai's tricks anymore and plays Baby Dragon (700) in Defense Mode. Unimpressed, Mai plays Elegant Egotist to bring out 2 more Harpie Ladies, an act she's going to do each turn (except that you only have 5 Monster Card Zones). Luckily, Mai can't attack this turn (You can with the real card.) Joey doesn't see how he can take down an army of Harpie Ladies but Yu-Gi-Oh makes him realize that Time Wizard could help him now. It's not in his hand so he must draw it and does, summoning Time Wizard (500) in Attack Mode and turning his Baby Dragon into Thousand Dragon (2400) in Attack Mode. (The real Time Wizard has a coin toss effect, which they kinda simulate here and in later episodes of this season and the real Thousand Dragon is a Fusion Monster, needing both Time Wizard and Baby Dragon, not to mention the right Fusion card.)

Time Wizard also left Mai's Harpie Ladies back at their original ATK so Joey attacks, destroying all of them and winning the duel. (You can only attack one monster per turn without another card stating otherwise but it's possible Time Wizard gives Thousand Dragon that ability but I think it's just part of the wacky rules of this season.) Mai can't believe she lost to an amateur and is taught a lesson about dueling for people she cares about other than herself. Joey has become a duelist that duels with his heart.
