Episode 6: First Duel

Fresh off Yami's win over Weevil, the group encounter Mai Valentine, whom has just beaten a Duelist that is angry over what took place involving her knowing what cards she'd play without looking at them. The group becomes uneasy, except for Joey, whom doesn't back down in spite of how Mai acts in response to her previous opponent's words. With the stakes set, Joey finds himself already at a big disadvantage until Yugi reminds Joey of the part of the field that his monsters will work with. However, in spite of the Field Power Bonus, Joey ends up losing multiple battles from Mai's attacks. Worse still, he's becoming rattled by Mai's psychic ability. It isn't until Joey focuses on the smell that he figures out what's going on. Still, even with this figured out, Mai keeps her lead in the Duel.

Joey feels backed into a corner and doesn't see a victory in sight until Yugi reminds him of a card he obtained on the boat to the island. Luckily for Joey, he draws it but now he must be successful with it as he has little LP to spare if it fails. Joey brings out his monster and makes the monsters on the field age in his favor. His attack is successful and he obtains Mai's Star Chip. Mai has learned a valuable lesson about respecting her opponents.
