True and False: Titanic History (Page 10)
What was Titanic? R.M.S Titanic (aka Royal Mail Steamer/Steamship) Titanic was an ocean liner that sailed from April 10th 1912 at Southampton, England to what was intended to be New York City, but sank on April 14/15th 1912. She was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland and was intended to be part of a trio of sister ships for White Star Line. Myth #10: Missing Binocculars? Seems like a critical oversight to leave something like this behind, right? Well not exactly. As it turns out, they weren't as essential as you might think. 1. Lookouts were deemed better seeing with their own eyes as binocculars actually reduce the field of view. 2. With the possibility of a light haze as Frederick Fleet reported that night, they couldn't even see the berg and binnoculars were only to be used when something was spotted. 3. Of course, had they used them to verify it was probably already too late as not long after they started the turn, they hit the berg.
