Titanic History: The Truth (Page 10)

What was Titanic?
R.M.S (aka Royal Mail Steamer/Steamship) Titanic swas an ocean liner that sailed from April 10th 1912 at Southampton, England to what was intended to be New York City, but sank on April 14/15th 1912. She was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland and was intended to be part of a trio of sister ships for White Star Line.

Fact #10: Wreck Discovery
It's probably about as famous as the disaster itself with the ship's discovery on the seabed back in 1985 by Robert Ballard. It may come as a surprise, but Titanic wasn't Ballard's initial search. He agreed to search for two submarines first and then was allowed to search for Titanic's remains with the time left. Searches for the wreck up to this point were a failure so Ballard opted to follow the trail of debris instead. Just when it appeared it'd be another failure, there was celebration at 2:00 AM on September 1st, 1985. They'd found one of Titanic's 5 boilers that fell out when the ship broke apart. The joy quickly became sadness as they remembered the disaster and were more respectful. From then on, they were able to visit the wreck basically at will, but Ballard was determined to have it protected for the future.
